Mo Willams: The Right Fit for LeBron James
Danny Ferry, the Cleveland Cavaliers general manager, has made a ton of moves in recent years to try to build a contender around All-Star LeBron James.
Ferry made a huge mistake when he signed guard Larry Hughes to a five-year, $70 million contract in the summer of 2005. Hughes ended up being injured the majority of the time he was in a Cavaliers uniform. He has since been traded away.
Last season, when Cleveland was knocked out of the playoffs, they gave the Boston Celtics a run for their money. James hit tough shots in that series, specifically in game seven, when he battled with Paul Pierce. In the end Pierce had teammates to kick the ball out to, to hit open shots, and Boston moved on to the Eastern Conference Finals.
It was unfair for James. He was put out there with a bunch of spot up shooters that included Delonte West, Sasha Pavlovic, Daniel Gibson, and Wally Szczerbiak.
As good as those guys were, they could not take anyone off the dribble and create their own shot.
On Aug. 13, 2008, when the Cleveland Cavaliers acquired Mo Williams in a three-team trade, they found a guy that could take some pressure off of James and help Cleveland win some basketball games.
Williams has been having his best season ever. He has helped make shots for other guys as well as helping Cleveland be in position for the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference.
Williams is having such a great season that he was selected to his first NBA All-Star game for injured forward Chris Bosh.
"I'm extremely excited for myself, for the organization, and for my teammates. They were extremely happy for me, as were the coaches. It's a great thing. It's one thing nobody can take away from me," Williams said.
LeBron James was also excited for the first time All-Star.
"It's was great," James said, "It's something we all wanted in this franchise. Mo was with me all weekend. I was able to guide him and let him know the good perks of being an All-Star."
If Danny Ferry wants to have a job he better keep making moves like this to try to appease LeBron James. He needs to make him feel like he needs to be in Cleveland his whole career.
