Memo to Jerry Angelo: Avoid the Roy Williams Temptation

Tab BamfordMar 6, 2009

Lost in the headlines when Dallas released "The Receiver" as Bill Parcells used to call Terrell Owens was another player being let go in Big D. Safety Roy Williams, best known for his horse-collar tackling style and big hits in college, was dropped by the Cowboys.

The Chicago Bears need a safety after letting Mike Brown leave. They've been in discussions with Darren Sharper, formerly of Minnesota. But now Williams is in the mix, and it scares me.

Why does it scare me? Let's look at Angelo's track record at the safety position.

He let Chris Harris go to Carolina, where he was better in 2008 than anyone the Bears put on the field. This, of course, comes a couple years after he "filled the need" at the safety position by bringing in Adam Archuleta to become the most expensive backup special-teams player in the franchise's history.

Bringing in Roy Williams, not the coach at North Carolina (who wouldn't look bad on the Bulls' bench) or the wide receiver who's still in Dallas (who wouldn't look bad in a Bears uniform), would fall in line with Angelo's history of being completely clueless when evaluating talent at the position.

He'd come cheaper than Sharper, but there are reasons for that. He isn't nearly the leader Sharper has been to be over his career. He also isn't close to the ballhawk that Sharper is and doesn't tackle as well as Helen Keller, much less Sharper.

But because he'd be cheap and has a recognizable name, he fits the mold of other moves Angelo has made. And that's why Roy Williams, the safety, being available scares me.

Please, Mr. Angelo, don't be tempted. Let someone else have Williams and go get the Bears a player that works.
