Timeout for T.O.: Where Will He Go Next?

Mark TravisMar 5, 2009

Now that the Dallas Cowboys have confirmed the release of Terrell Owensalong with safety Roy Williams—it is time to look into what the future holds for one of the greatest wide receivers of all-time, who has some slight character issues.

Before I get into the teams that might sign Owens, here are the teams that are officially out of the market for him: Saints, Chargers, Eagles, Texans, Browns, Atlanta, Ravens, 49ers, Vikings, and the Giants.

Ok, that leaves about 20 teams who haven’t said whether or not they have any interest in Terrell. So here are the teams that have the best chance/need for Owens:

Tennessee Titans

The Titans have struggled with their wide receiving situation for a couple of years now, and I would argue that they would have gotten to at least the AFC Championship game with a set-in-stone No. 1. Last season, Justin Gage was their leading receiver with just 651 yards.

Tennessee makes its money with their defense and their stellar running game. Last season, the Titans had one of the greatest RB tandems in the NFL in Chris Johnson and LenDale White. With T.O. in the system, running room for those two would be even greater than it was last season.

Earlier this offseason, Tennessee signed former Steeler Nate Washington, so adding T.O.—a true No. 1—would work wonders for Kerry Collins and (possibly?) Vince Young.

Oakland Raiders

The Raiders took a chance on Randy Moss in 2005 while he struggled with some character issues, so why not do the same with Owens?

Last season, the Raiders only had one receiver with over 367 yards, tight end Zach Miller, who had 56 grabs for 778 yards. The next highest total was return specialist Johnnie Lee Higgins who finished with 22 catches for 366 yards.

With those poor numbers, adding T.O. could really improve their passing offense and possibly the development of JaMarcus Russell.

Much like Tennessee, Oakland also has a very good one-two punch in their running game with Darren McFadden and Justin Fargas, so Terrell would help them get running room as well.

And as long as the Raiders have Al Davis as the owner, anything is possible (/KG’d).

Indianapolis Colts

The Colts do not need T.O., but he sure would help in making up for the production that Marvin Harrison used to bring. With a very vocal and strong leader in Peyton Manning, I think the Colts have a good shot at controlling Owens.

Also, Terrell hasn’t played with a QB that he should respect. Jeff Garcia? Donovan McNabb? Tony Romo? With an all-time great and the best in the game right now, I think T.O. could finally show some respect for his QB.

The only question is if Owens can accept being a No. 2, as Reggie Wayne is far ahead of him when you look at their ages.
