A Case for Terrell Owens To Be a Denver Bronco

Sayre BedingerMar 5, 2009

As if a representative for all 32 teams on this Web site has not put out an article stating whether or not Terrell Owens should be on their team, here comes yet another for all of you to disagree with. However, before you jump to the comment board, please hear me out on this one.

Terrell Owens could become a member of the Denver Broncos. There are already a whole list of teams who have publicly stated that they are not interested in Owens, so lets debunk some of the myths right now.

According to Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com, here are the teams that have explicitly expressed their desire to keep Owens away from their squad:  Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles, New York Giants, Washington Redskins, Baltimore Ravens, San Francisco 49ers, Minnesota Vikings, Atlanta Falcons, Cleveland Browns, San Diego Chargers, Philadelphia Eagles, New York Jets, Tennessee Titans, St. Louis Rams, New Orleans Saints, Miami Dolphins, and Oakland Raiders

Over half of the league has already confirmed that they are not interested in Owens, and the Broncos are not currently on that list. Let's go through the remaining squads available and decide whether or not they would take a flyer on T.O.

NFC West

Just recently signed T.J. Houshmandzadeh to a big contract, and have high priced receivers Deion Branch and Nate Burleson already. Not a likely destination for Owens.

Permission to laugh?

NFC North

Could happen, but the Bears have never been willing to fork over big cash for wide receivers. If they are willing, is Owens willing to cope with a mediocre quarterback?

Unless Owens is playing for the money, and at this point, I doubt it, see Arizona Cardinals.

Donald Driver, Jordy Nelson, Donald Lee, James Jones, and Greg Jennings.  Need I say more? The fact that Green Bay runs a lot of three and four-wide-receiver sets could make this an interesting landing spot, but it is unlikely.

NFC South

This would be an interesting destination. Carolina already has a lot tied up in Julius Peppers and Jordan Gross this offseason, but T.O. may find this an attractive place to try and win a championship.

Antonio Bryant is the franchise player, Michael Clayton was recently signed to a long-term extension. Need I say more?

AFC South

They wouldn't re-sign Marvin Harrison, why would they go after Terrell Owens?

Andre Johnson and Terrell Owens would be a great duo, but the Texans probably already feel their receiving corps of David Anderson, Kevin Walter, Andre Davis, and Owen Daniels fits their run-first scheme.

Jacksonville is a possible destination, but they are a run-oriented offense and I get the feeling Jack Del Rio's personality is a bit strong for him to gel with Terrell Owens.  Jacksonville isn't really a championship contender either, so T.O. may stay away.

AFC East

How sick would a receiving core of Moss, Welker, and Owens be? Belichick may have the mettle to stand Owens, but the team doesn't really have the cap space. He may be willing to take a pay cut to sign with them if they show any interest.

Owens will not want to play in Buffalo. Not an attractive enough of a venue or market.  They aren't very good either...

AFC North

Could be a potential destination for Owens, but it is highly doubtful. The Bengals already have to deal with Chad Johnson.

Why? Just, why?

AFC West

Could be intriguing because of the Matt Cassel deal, but Kansas City is two or three years away from the playoffs, much less a Super Bowl appearance.

Which brings us now to the Denver Broncos.  Here are reasons why the Mile High City would be an attractive venue for the soap opera that is Terrell Owens.

1.  Brandon Marshall's possible suspension

With Marshall potentially being out for eight games this season, Owens could be an attractive option for the Broncos.

2.  Willing to spend

No other team in the league has been as active as the Denver Broncos this off-season.  The Broncos have signed 11 new players to their roster.

3.  T.O. was almost a Bronco once before

Back in 2006, Owens almost signed with the Denver Broncos. He was in town for a full week visiting with coaches, touring the city, but ultimately he decided to take the guaranteed money from the Dallas Cowboys.

4.  Dallas still owes him more than $10 million

5.  13 seasons, zero rings

The Broncos have an elite offense, and Owens is playing to win at this point in his career. Denver was in first place for all but one week of the season last year.

Of the teams interested, the Broncos undoubtedly have the best quarterback. Bringing in a future Hall of Fame receiver would definitely help ease Cutler's mind about a trade rumor.

7.  NFC East on the menu

The 2009 Broncos schedule features a tour of the NFC East, something Owens may be attracted to. Getting to play against the Eagles AND the Cowboys (T.O. licks lips)?

8.  35 and counting

While Owens has been known for his locker room antics, he may now realize it is time to grow out of that phase and pursue a ring.  This release may have really opened his eyes.

9.  Marshall, Royal, Owens, Stokley?

Are you kidding me?  Seriously, would any other team stand a chance?

So there you have it, Owens' possible destinations now include the Bears, Jaguars, Panthers, and Broncos. With the talent he possesses, he's got to land somewhere, right?
