Why Terrell Owens Will Be a Minnesota Viking
On Wednesday night, future Hall of Famer Terrell Owens was cut from the Cowboys. He spent three controversial seasons in Dallas.
In three seasons with the Cowboys, Owens caught 255 passes for over 3,500 yards. He also had 38 touchdowns. Last year was his worst season of the three, as he only caught 10 touchdowns.
Honestly, I wasn't expecting the Cowboys to release him. I figured that they had worked out their differences. Apparently, Jerry Jones is really cracking the whip down hard.
Where does the 35-year-old, six-time Pro Bowler go? There are several options, but one I find very likely is the Minnesota Vikings.
After missing out on T.J. Houshmandzadeh, the Vikings are still on the market for a top-grade receiver. Can Terrell Owens fit the bill? I think so.
He still has plenty left in the tank, if he can stay out of trouble. Many of you will say that Minnesota doesn't need to sign a locker-room distraction. He might be, and he might not be.
The Vikings must sign a solid receiver before they are all taken. Laveranues Coles signed with the Bengals today. Marvin Harrison and Terrell Owens are the only realistic options that could be a legitimate threat. Why not sign one of the two? The Vikes have plenty of money to dish out.
Owens has played in the NFC his entire career, and I expect that trend to continue. Will he wind up with a rival like the Redskins or Giants? I doubt either team would want him.
The Redskins spent two draft picks last year on Malcolm Kelly and Devin Thomas. The Giants are low on cap after signing several free agents, such as Michael Boley, Chris Canty, and Rocky Bernard.
I don't expect Owens to be a free agent for long. He's far too talented to be without a team for more than a few days. You take Owens, Bernard Berrian, and Adrian Peterson, put them together, and you have a great offense. The Vikings must continue to add weapons on the offensive side of the ball.
His hands are still tremendous, and his quickness is often tough to beat. His age is a major factor, but he's a reliable veteran who can possibly mentor younger players like Sidney Rice and even Bernard Berrian.
I'm on the bandwagon to get Terrell Owens. No matter what, the Vikings need to either draft a receiver in the first round or sign a top-notch player in free agency.
