Jay Cutler To Chicago, Not Happening

Luke DornaMar 4, 2009

So McDaniels has come out and said that Jay Cutler is no longer on the trading block. However, in this day and age of teams saying one thing and doing the other a few days later, few things can be ruled out.

In fact, I hypothesize that the news networks actually request the teams to make the most vague statements possible, allowing them to fill hours upon hours of commercial laden coverage with inane speculation. But I digress. The fact of the matter is Jay Cutler could still be on the trading block, and Chicago's quarterback comedy continues to drag on long past its prime, which leads us to speculate ourselves on the possibility of Cutler coming to the Windy City.

The fact of the matter is more than likely a resounding no. Pride comes before the fall, and if there is one thing the Bears management is bad at, it's admitting they were wrong. Drafting in the first round is a close second. Chicago will continue to push ever forward with the QB of the future until he too is eventually booed off the field.

For whatever reason, and despite the impact of the Brady's and Manning's of the league, Chicago will continue to believe you can win championships with game managements style QBs. This in fact, can be done, as long as your game manager doesn't throw picks or fumble the ball a lot, ie Sexy Rexy.

But assume the Bears admit the error of their ways, and decide to go for a trade to finally get an impact player under center. Because God knows Halas Hall won't spend a dime in free agency, unless of course it's on a low round draft pick they eyed back in '05 who has started one, count em one, game since his entrance to league. I digress again. Should the Bears pursue Cutler?

The whole reason Cutler went on the trading block was because they wanted Matt Cassel reunited with McDaniels. That's it. You don't trade away Pro bowl QB's unless you've got a game plan, and I don't think an uproven first round draft pick in a shallow QB draft is going to cut it.

Maybe one of our defensive players to bolster their run defense, but our defense can't really afford the hole either. The fact of the matter is the needs and the wants of the two teams don't line up and the Bear's time would be better spent trying to get their current QB a legit weapon in the passing game.

Maybe the Bears wouldn't be scratching their heads at QB if they gave Orton a few weapons to throw to. Orton will be never be a stellar QB, but he could be a good QB if his receivers weren't named Hester and Davis. Hester scored twice as many TDs as a returner in '07 than as a receiver in '08. He is very very fast, but there is a huge difference between catching a punt where all the defenders start 40+ yards away and a pass threaded through defensive traffic with a corner in your face.

I personally feel that Orton could become successful given a solid receiver group to chuck the rock to. Not to mention even a mild air attack will take pressure off of Forte who had the line stacked against him all year. The TE duo + Forte + one good receiver and suddenly defenses are playing honest, options are opening and Orton is looking like a decent QB again.

And since this is about Cutler anyway, let's get back to that. Getting Cutler to sign on to coming to Chicago is one tough sell. You currently throw to Brandon Marshall and that stud rookie Eddie Royal, but we would like you to come throw to Devin Hester and Rashied Davis. Yeah, I'd stay with my ungrateful coach over that mess.
