Coach Chris Petersen Streamlining the Boise State Backfield
Look for the Bronco running game to be maximized and streamlined this '09 season. The offensive line has plenty of experience and depth this year.
All of last year’s starters are back, with the exception of Andrew Woodruff, who graduated and may or not turn pro depending on what he chooses to do.
Sophomore Chuck Hayes, who played on the defensive line last year but practiced with the O-line, is making the switch to offensive guard.
There are a couple changes within the backfield. The first change in the BSU backfield involves all-purpose running back Doug Martin.
It appears that Martin (who would be BSU’s third tailback in the rotation), who played special teams and defense last year on occasion, will be trying out (this spring) for Ellis Powers' nickelback spot.
Doug likes to hit, and with his speed, he should see plenty of time if he beats out junior Jason Robinson, redshirt freshman Tommy Smith, and/or junior college transfer Winston Venable. Smith and Venable will not be easy to beat out.
The Broncos RB turning full-time LB/DB only benefits the team. The DB positions look to be stronger and faster then ever.
The BSU running game returns junior starters Jeremy Avery and D.J. Harper as starting tailbacks. Richie Brockel returns for his senior year at fullback/tight end.
Bronco backs will have plenty of opportunity to carry the ball this season, and Bronco fans look for them to express themselves to the max now that Ian Johnson has graduated and is most likely headed for the NFL.
The second change to the backfield is with sophomore linebacker Dan Paul. Paul has been moved to fullback, and his blocking prowess will definitely aid the offensive linemen in creating holes for Boise State backs.
Also joining Avery and Harper will be another redshirt freshman, Matt Kaiserman. The Broncos are expecting Kaiserman to do very well.
Coach Petersen said he’s looking to streamline the backfield and “not have so many guys in the mix there so whoever emerges, we can get those guys in a rhythm.”
By fixing the backfield situation this year, Coach Pete will also be preparing for Malcolm Johnson’s entrance in 2010 (the state of Oregon’s best running back two years straight), as he steps into the alignment.
The overall changes to the backs will shape up the Boise Broncos and offer a legitimate running attack for all of the next four years (Bronco fans, will be saying thank you very much).
