A-Rod: I Want to Play Next to Jose Reyes

Bronx Baseball DailyMar 3, 2009

Alex Rodriguez opened his mouth today and guess what came out? If you guessed he said something profound about kids staying off drugs, you didn’t read my headline ,and are wrong.

During a press conference after playing with his World Baseball Classic team today A-Rod was so impressed with Jose Reyes that he expressed his desire to play next to the Met’s shortstop everyday.

“I wish he was leading off on our team or playing on our team, that’s fun to watch,” A-Rod said about Reyes.

“Anytime you have that type of speed, we have a guy in (Brett) Gardner, that’s probably the most fun you can have is watching a guy like that run.”

It was an innocent remark on Arod’s part, but immediately some people took it as a slight against the Yankees own shortstop and team captain Derek Jeter.

“He then sent word through a team PR man that his comments shouldn’t be taken as a shot at Derek Jeter,” Peter Abraham wrote on his blog earlier today. “No, of course not. Reyes plays shortstop. That’s the same position Jeter plays. How could anybody take that as a shot?”

Obviously this is not a slight against Jeter. A-Rod was merely talking about how great a talent Reyes is, but with all the past history between A-Rod and Jeter, it wasn’t smart to say something like that.

It’s like walking down the street with your wife and when you walk past a really hot chick you stop and say to your friend, ‘" wouldn’t mind waking up next to her every morning." It is obviously a joke, but it is in crude taste and definitely never should have been said.

That’s A-Rod though, and we as Yankee fans better get used to it, because he’s ours for the next nine seasons. Judging by past history, he isn’t going to get any smarter anytime soon.
