Jay Cutler Could Save The Chicago Bears

Daniel Scherer-EmundsMar 3, 2009

If General Manager Jerry Angelo and the Chicago Bears' organization think that Kyle Orton can be a franchise quarterback, they're crazier than Joaquin Phoenix.

With "Sexy Rexy" out of the picture and Angelo's allergy towards beneficial transactions, it appears that Captain Neckbeard will remain under center yet again for Chicago. Could someone please slap me across the face with a nine iron?

Don't get me wrong, Orton is a decent quarterback, but that's all he'll ever be. He is, by no means, the savior for a team who has started over 40 different gunslingers since 1992. In 33 career starts, Orton has thrown for 5,319 yards, 30 touchdowns, and 27 interceptions, with a passer rating of 71.1.

During the 2008 season, Orton did a mediocre job. He wasn't losing any games with his arm (for the most part), but he wasn't winning any either. Yeah, he made a handful of good plays, but sometimes I wasn't sure if the Bears had an NFL quarterback or Dave Grohl of the "Foo Fighters" commanding their offense.

I'm fed up with mediocrity. I want a quarterback who won't make me want to take a nap on the nearest set of train tracks. I want a quarterback who won't throw seven interceptions in three games down the stretch when we're making a run at the playoffs.

I want a quarterback who can throw the ball accurately past 10 yards. And, most importantly, I want a consistent quarterback who I can count on for at least five years to produce solid numbers.

Is that too much to ask?

I thought I'd never get my dream quarterback until the Jay Cutler rumors surfaced earlier this week. It seemed like a match made in heaven. A young, proven quarterback whose favorite team growing up was none other than "Da Bears." It was perfect. He matched all of my wishes. Then I remembered that Jerry Angelo was the Bears' GM.

Realistically, I know that Angelo won't make a move for Cutler, but, honestly, why shouldn't he at least try? This is a guy who almost ended up as a Buccaneer for the 19th overall pick earlier this offseason.

We're talking about a guy with no drawbacks. A guy whose already been to a Pro Bowl. A guy whose career quarterback rating is 16 points higher than Orton's. A guy who's a year younger than Orton. A guy whose been in the league a year less than Orton, but has already passed for almost twice as many touchdowns.

Last year, Orton had a QB rating of 71.9. Cutler had a higher rating than that in all but three games in '08.

If I were Angelo, I'd give up anybody it takes to get Cutler. The Bears aren't getting any younger. Their ferocious defense isn't what it used to be. I'd much rather acquire a guy that has already had success in the big leagues than sign another college standout.

The Bears are in desperate need for a quarterback. With Matt Forte and Devin Hester, they have the potential to be an explosive offense. Orton just won't cut it.

Angelo needs to wake up and do his job; Cutler should be on the top of his to-do-list.

Cutler has the potential to save the Bears' franchise. His initials aren't just a coincidence.
