Kentucky Is in Joe Lunardi's Field of 64.....Is He Smoking Blue Grass?

Jeff KalafaMar 3, 2009

I don't know what ESPN's Joe Lunardi is thinking when he includes Kentucky as one the the 64 teams that would be in the NCCA Basketball Tournament if it was held today.

Unless the selection committee is awarding points for past championships and arena size, Kentucky doesn't belong in this dance!

You can package it anyway you want but Kentucky is an above-average team in a below-average major conference.

The Wildcats are on a 3-6 slide and their RPI is not "tournament-worthy." An RPI of 66 has NIT written all over it.

Kentucky has a 19-10 overall record and are 8-6 in the SEC, a conference that may  only get two invitations to the NCAA tournament.

Kentucky's biggest win might be West Virginia. I know, they swept Tennessee and beat the Gators but they got swept by South Carolina, lost to Mississippi, Mississippi State and they lost to conference leader LSU.

And speaking of the road—Kentucky is under .500 on the road this year. Not very impressive when selecting teams to play in the NCAA tournament!

In meaningful games out of conference, they beat West Virginia and Kansas State...Not bad, but they lost to North Carolina, Miami and Louisville.

The Wildcats have two regular season games left and will probably split them. They'll beat Georgia and probably lose at Florida.

If they win in Gainesville, that would certainly help their chances of making it into the tournament but they still might have to win a couple of games in the SEC Tournament to insure a bid.

There's just too many teams on Lundardi's bubble that have accomplished more this year than the Wildcats.

Maryland at 18-10 and 7-7 in the ACC deserves a ticket to the dance before Kentucky.  Cincinnati is 18-11 and 8-8 in the Big East.  Georgetown has an RPI of 40 and has played the toughest schedule in the country.

I'm sorry Ashley, there are bubble teams with better resumes than Kentucky!

The selection committee meets in less than two weeks. The deciding factor, if Kentucky is on the bubble, could be the opening night loss to VMI.
