A Make-Believe Deal That Is Fun To Think About, But Won't Happen

Kevin MullowneyMar 3, 2009

Ok, bear with me here. I fully realize that this following scenario is a complete pipe dream, and on the surface seems completely silly and may make little sense, until you really start to think about it.

Jay Cutler has found himself on the outs with the new regime in Denver, and no one is quite sure why, though I choose to speculate that Josh McDaniels likes his quarterbacks to have leadership abilities and so far Cutler has not displayed that quality.

What I'm proposing is this:

Ship Cutler and his golden arm to San Francisco in exchange for another former golden boy who could definitely benefit from a change of scenery. Alex Smith needs out of San Francisco, and Denver might be just the place for him.

Yes, Smith has been injury plagued and inconsistent, but playing behind a porous line and for seven different offensive coordinators during his tenure does not breed consistency. Throw in San Fran's second or third-round pick, and you have a pretty good deal for both sides here.

McDaniels has proven that he can work with QBs, you need only to look to Matt Cassel to see that. Smith is coming off of injury, so he'll need time to get back into the mix of things, and to that end, McDaniels should reach out to the veteran QB with Denver ties that can implement the leadership qualities Denver will need.

Gus Frerotte, come on down! I've always thought Frerotte was a better QB that he has been given credit for, and he'd be coming back to a good situation in Denver. He has Brandon Marshall (at least for now), Eddie Royal, Tony Scheffler & Brandon Stokley to throw to, and somebody will end up running the ball for Denver, be it Buckhalter or Arrington, with Torain & Hillis as backups and darkhorses.

Denver can also draft a QB late to create some competition in camp, and the something about second string QB, Chase Patton from Missouri makes me think of Matt Cassel, and McDaniels is/was really high on him.

There is a good chance that Patton will be available late or possibly not even get drafted leaving him available for a free agent invite. Patton got stuck behind Chase Daniel, but has the proto-typical size that the NFL likes (6-5, 220), and Patton was a former High School All-American.

Anyone else see the Cassel comparison here?

In any event, this is all speculation and make-believe, but Cutler could definitely benefit from the change of scenery at this point, and Smith definitely needs the change of pace.

San Francisco gets that QB they need and can then focus elsewhere in the draft (WR anyone?!), Denver gets a former first-round pick, possibly adds a strong veteran presence, picks up another draft pick to help the defense out and if Patton is available late, they get another QB to add to the mix.

Who knows, a week ago I was convinced Cutler was untouchable, but that was obviously not the case, so why not see if this scenario has legs.
