Breaking Down the 2 Biggest Trades of the NBA Draft

Bryan MilwardJun 28, 2007
IconI know everyone's gushing about the addition of Greg Oden and Kevin Durant to the Blazers and Sonics so when they've thoroughly ignored their stellar careers 10 years from now due to their flaming east coast bias, they can point to this moment in time to refute that point. Anyways the two biggest trades were reported by the ESPN gurus and finally confirmed towards the end of draft night.
The Celtics got things going early by sending Delonte West, Wally Szczerbiak, and the No. 5 pick(Jeff Green) to Seattle for Ray Allen and Glen "Big Baby" Davis.  The Sonics clearly got the better end of this trade as they were able to lose the 51 million left on Allen's salary, which they can use to resign Rashard Lewis, and they added Jeff Green who can be a great complement to Lewis and Durant, or if they are unable to resign Lewis he'll be a much cheaper replacement and may wind up being a better player in a year or two. The Celtics on the other hand lost a solid young guard and a top 5 pick which they could have used on Green or Brewer or Brandan Wright and gotten greater value over the next 3 years. The thing that really doesn't make sense is that Allen is the type of addition that a contender uses to push itself over the top. Boston is basically going into win now mode with a roster that is 2-3 years at least from being a threat in the pathetic East. With Allens huge salary they are basically condemning themselves to 3 years of mediocrity with perhaps a 7 or 8 seed in the mix followed by a return to the lottery.

The Knicks and the Blazers had the other big trade of the night which sent Zack Randolph, Dan Dickau, and Fred Jones to New York and Channing Frye and Steve Francis to Portland. I have to give the Knicks the slight edge in this trade since they got rid of a terrible contract(albeit in exchange for another bad one) and an injury prone center(it kills me to say that forgive me Channing) for a good post player and some guys that need to spend the offseason working on their cheers, high fives, and bench warming. The trade could easily blow up on the Knicks however as Randolph is without a doubt one of the bigger head cases in the league and going to a team(Marbury, Robinson, Richardson, and of course Isiah) and city filled with them. I don't see how this trade makes sense to the Blazers though even with their knew "Character Counts" theme as Francis is a thug who hogs the ball and won't fit with the other guys on the team and they just got a franchise center so unless there gonna move Channing to PF then I don't know what to make of it.
My best friend Chris' take on the Celts-Sonics trade: "Damn Ray Allen is going to Boston. Now I've remember that when we play 2K8 or I can't shoot 3s all game."
