Jay Cutler Not Happy with Potential Trade from Denver

Mark TravisMar 1, 2009

Earlier this weekend, the Denver Broncos entertained offers regarding their star quarterback Jay Cutler.

Most of the rumors revolved around the Patriots, and what they were planning on doing with Matt Cassel.

The main rumors involved three teams: the Patriots, Broncos, and Buccaneers. The proposed deal had Cutler going to Tampa, Cassel going to Denver, and a pick and/or a player going back to New England.

That deal seems likely as it is fair for all teams involved.

Cassel and Cutler carry similar value, but possess different skill sets. Cutler is a gunslinger and Cassel is a game manager. The Patriots would be getting a package similar to the one that they got in their deal with the Chiefs, so it would be fair on their part.

But the Patriots decided not to go with the deal, so their talks with the Bucs and the Broncos ceased.

Unfortunately, Cutler still thought that the Broncos were still looking to deal him. When talking to the Denver Post, Cutler said that he still thought that the team was fielding offers for him.

“We’ll see where I end up at. I liked it here, I liked playing with these guys but obviously they’re not going to let me have that opportunity,” Cutler told the Post.

As Mike Florio pointed out, he uses the past tense.

“I’m upset,” Cutler said in the same interview. “I mean I’m really shocked at this point.  I could see why they want [Matt] Cassel. I don’t know if they think I can’t run the system or I don’t have the skills for it. I just don’t get it. Or if they don’t think they can sign me with my next contract. I just don’t know what it is. I’ve heard I’m still on the trading block.”

The organization quickly responded to their star player’s comments by saying that they never had any interest in trading him.

“We don’t want to trade Jay. We never did. He’s our quarterback. We’re excited about this season. And excited about what we’re doing here in free agency to improve our team,” said GM Josh McDaniels.

But Cutler still isn’t convinced.

“My understanding at this point is they’re trying to trade me,” said Cutler earlier today.

No matter how much talk there was about trading Cutler, I don’t think Denver ever came really close to trading him. But the organization has a lot of work to do if they want to repair their relationship with their quarterback.
