How Mike Krzyzewski's System Has Duke Reaping the Benefits Year After Year
The Duke University men’s basketball team has a storied history unlike any other and currently has probably the most well known coach in all of college basketball. In college basketball it is almost impossible to be considered a Final Four contender every year, but somehow, Duke and their head coach Mike Krzyzewski are in the mix for a spot in the tourney’s Final Four year in and year out.
Of course, Duke may not have the most talented team every year, but it seems as though they might have the most basketball-savvy squad. This constant success comes from a source that goes unnoticed.

Coach K has always been thought of as one of, if not the best recruiters in the nation, but he didn’t get that reputation for recruiting the most talented players—he got it for recruiting basketball players.
Krzyzewski has figured out a way to mold his coaching style, mentoring, and recruiting strategies around the changing actions and morals of his players. He is aware of the fact that the most talented players usually intend on leaving following their first year; this is where Coach K’s magic is really applied.
When Coach K recruits his players every year, he doesn’t look for necessarily the most talent. What he looks for are the best basketball players. He creates a team of smart, athletic, and hard-working basketball players who each have their own specific skill sets and roles on the team.
The players that Coach Krzyzewski recruits are players that are made for his system and plan on staying with him for the full four seasons. He wants players who value their education and their college careers.
The fact that these players have a few years with each other gives them an extreme advantage; they have an unheard of sense of team chemistry in terms of college basketball. Duke is the only school where almost every single one of their star players attends school for his full four years.
These are the reasons Duke puts a great team on the floor every year, and will continue to do so if this strategy stays as effective as it has been up to this point.
