NFL Free Agency: First Day's Biggest Winners and Losers
Yesterday was the first day of NFL free agency and it was crazy.
The Redskins added two star defensemen, Minnesota possibly solved their QB problem, the Patriots signed a veteran RB, TE Winslow went south, Denver may finally have a star on defense, Warner may go to San Francisco, and draft picks were flying around in every trade.
So, what happened big?

Projecting Every NFL Team's Starting Lineup 🔮

Rookie WRs Who Will Outplay Their Draft Value 📈
- Bucs-Browns: Winslow to TB; Browns get undisclosed draft picks
- Redskins: signed Albert Haynesworth (TEN)
- Patriots: signed RB Fred Taylor
- Vikings-Texans: QB Rosenfels to Minnesota; Texans get fourth round pick
- Jets: signed LB Bart Scott
- Pats-Chiefs: Vrabel is in KC
- Titans: Collins will stay
- Saints: Vilma will stay, too
- Jets-Eagles: CB Sheppard to the Big Apple for draft picks
...and that's just the big trades.
Biggest Winners
1. Minnesota Vikings
A fourth round pick rarely becomes a great player. In fact, they're kind of ignored. So, giving up an unknown one of them is definitely a good move, when you can get a decent starting QB like Rosenfels from an up-and-coming team like Houston.
The Vikings quarterback issues are likely over with Rosenfels as QB, and they have him in a two-year deal.
Now, the Vikings can turn and see what they're going to do with Ferotte and Jackson. Jackson may be a keeper, as he can be an okay backup to Rosenfels, and Ferotte's career is probably done.
2. New York Jets
Picked up a lot of defensive players for almost nothing. Linebacker Bart Scott was a good addition (even though I think Scott is overrated), and Sheppard is another needed cornerback. Just draft picks and money in return.
3. Washington Redskins
They have the biggest headline—Haynesworth—but they did need to get help on offense and didn't.
Now, Haynesworth is getting $100 million, with $41 million guaranteed, and the Redskins are definitely running out of cap space for a QB.
Collins or Warner would have been great players to sign, but they aren't going to get either of them. Now, Washington will have to settle to trading to get a QB!
However, DeAngelo Hall was a good player to keep. Nice move there by the Redskins' management.
4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Tight end Kellen Winslow could be just what the Buccaneers need to get back on track, after finishing last season with four straight losses. Still, nobody knows which draft picks they gave up for him. This team is looking shaky. LB Derrick Brooks is gone, too.
5. Tennessee Titans
They did pretty much nothing except for signing Collins to a two-year deal, but that was an important move. Collins handled this star-less offense very well in the past season, and led the Titans to 13-3. Tennessee needed to have kept him, if they wanted to stay in contention for the AFC Championship and they did.
Biggest Losers
1. Baltimore Ravens
It wasn't like they could do much about it, but this offseason has been a complete disaster for the Ravens so far.
Star linebacker Ray Lewis is a likely candidate to play for a team other than Baltimore next season, ILB Bart Scott is now a Jet, K Matt Stover is probably leaving, and their defensive coordinator has gone to be a head coach. Oh no, Baltimore. This doesn't look good at all.
2. Houston Texans
What were the Texans thinking?!
Schaub is a decent QB, but Rosenfels led the Texans to an 8-4 finish after Schaub got Houston off on a 0-4 start. Now Rosenfels is in Minnesota, and all Houston has is an extra fourth-round draft pick.
3. Philadelphia Eagles
Brian Dawkins doesn't seem to feel any urge to stay in Philadelphia, like I thought he would—not at all. And, they're just getting draft picks in an exchange with the Jets for cornerback Sheppard.
4. Detroit Lions
They didn't do anything. Maybe they are so stupid they're going to keep the 0-16 roster!
