Minnesota Vikings Trade for Sage Rosenfels; Re-Sign Jayme Mitchell

Tanner ThomsFeb 27, 2009

On the opening day of free agency, the Vikings traded for a potential starting quarterback, and re-signed a great depth player in Jayme Mitchell.

Sage Rosenfels was the backup quarterback for the Houston Texans. After the Vikings completed the trade, which sent Houston a fourth-round pick, Rosenfels was immediately signed to a two-year contract extension.

Mitchell, a defensive end, did not play a single game last season. He was missed on the depth chart and is looking to rebound next season. There is a chance he could compete for a starting job at defensive end.

He is only 24 years old, and has played in 23 games in three seasons. He has four career sacks; three of those came in 2006.

As expected, the Vikings didn't make any big splashes in free agency.

T.J. Houshmandzadeh will visit Minneapolis tomorrow to discuss a possible deal. He had over 900 receiving yards this past season with the Bengals.

Also expressing interest in the 31-year-old receiver are the Seattle Seahawks and Philadelphia Eagles. I could see the Eagles giving him a four- to five-year deal. They let go of Brian Dawkins, which will allow them to have more cap room.

Don't get me wrong, I would love him on the Vikings, but it sounds a little far-fetched.

On the bright side, Bernard Berrian was offered more money with the Raiders last year, but he signed with Minnesota instead. There is a chance that T.J. will go with whatever team he thinks will give him the best chance to win a Super Bowl.

Elsewhere in the NFL, the Redskins signed Albert Haynesworth, the Jets picked up Bart Scott, and the Patriots signed former Jaguar Fred Taylor.

Well, that does it Vikings fans. It was a busy day today.
