Busch Brothers Ever So Briefly Together on Las Vegas Front Row

Mary Jo BuchananFeb 27, 2009

For a brief moment, it was an all Busch front row at Las Vegas Motor Speedway for the NASCAR Sprint Cup race in Sin City, USA.  Younger brother Kyle Busch qualified on the pole and big brother Kurt landed on the outside pole.

It looked like history had been made, with the Busch brothers being the first siblings since 2000 to secure the front row together, starting the race side by side.

In 2000, Rusty and Kenny Wallace qualified in the one, two positions at the race in Martinsville.  And in 1998, Bobby and Terry Labonte took the front row in the Daytona 500.

While history seemed to have repeated itself with the Busch siblings, the dynamic brotherly duo will sadly be broken up when the green flag flies on Sunday.  Kyle Busch will have to move to the back of the field from the pole, having to change an engine after the practice session.

"Unfortunately, I won't be in the cool photo next to my brother at the drop of the green flag," said Kyle Busch.  But he is determined not to let this small setback stop him in his march forward on race day.

So, instead of the all Busch front row show, Jimmie Johnson will insert himself into the first row mix.  Johnson qualified in third in his Lowe's/Kobalt Tools Chevrolet but will move forward due to Kyle's engine woes.

Another Toyota will also have to move to the rear of the field after a great qualifying lap.  David Reutimann, of Michael Waltrip Racing, will have to drop back from his fourth qualifying position to the rear due to an engine change.

Marcos Ambrose had a fantastic qualifying effort, securing the fifth spot.  Again, engine woes haunted his Toyota as well and he too will have to start from the back.

Positions six through ten in qualifying included Ryan Newman, Kasey Kahne, Mark Martin, Kevin Harvick, and Tony Stewart.

Other fan notables did not qualify well at all.  Both Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. came very close to wrecking their cars on their first laps.

These two drivers were able to gather themselves back up for a second lap try.  Gordon qualified in the 28th spot and Junior will start in the 31st position.

Matt Kenseth, who won the first two races of the season and is going for a record three wins in a row, had a bad draw and went out early for his qualifying lap.  He will start the Shelby 427 race in the 40th spot.

Drivers that did not qualify and will have to make the long cross country trip home include Travis Kvapil, Dave Blaney, Mike Garvey, Jeremy Mayfield, Sterling Marlin, Scott Riggs, Tony Raines, and Dexter Bean.

A. J. Allmendinger threw his car around the track during "knock out" qualifying to make it into the show.  Joining him in the race are Brad Keselowski and Regan Smith.

So, will Kyle Busch be able to drive his way back to the front after going to the rear for the start?  Will Matt Kenseth continue his historic winning streak?  Or will a dark horse emerge from out of nowhere to win this race in the casino capital of America?

For all intensive purposes, it is a crap shoot as to who will be in Vegas Victory Lane this weekend, especially after this eventful qualifying session.

Let the dice roll.
