John Tortorella Meets Deepak Chopra on Skates

Martin AveryFeb 26, 2009

There has been a lot of speculation in the print media about the upcoming marriage, I mean working relationship between John Tortorella and Sean Avery. Apparently, working with Aves was a condition of employment for Torts.

Avery just graduated from Anger Management and has been called "Deepak Chopra on skates." Maybe he can help the Rangers new coach with some issues.

Perhaps they could go see The Love Guru together. Maybe the whole Rangers crew could go, and they could have a big group hug afterwards.

When Avery was suspended by the NHL and sent to anger management, it got a mixed reaction from hockey pundits and fans. It was a split decision.

Many said the punishment did not fit the crime, it was way out of whack.  Avery might have some issues, but anger wasn't one of them, and with all the violence, fighting, maiming, in hockey, why send someone to anger management for a locker room comment?

The other side was much more vociferous, suggesting Avery should never play hockey again, anywhere, not even the KHL, never mind the NHL.

The people who voiced those opinions sounded quite angry, as though they might have some issues. They sound as though they might need some Anger Management.

There has been a lot of speculation in the media about what will happen when or if Avery joins the Rangers and Tortorella is the coach. Most pundits predict Torts will whip Avery into shape.

Maybe he's too late. I can just imagine their first conversation.

Torts: Alright, Avery, you're gonna learn to shut up and straighten out!

Aves:  Hey, coach, have you heard of The Happiness Prescription? I use the mantras they suggest and they help me believe that I love myself.

Torts: What the ....?

Aves:  I truly believe that if I learn to accept and love myself then I will do the same with others and be better able to accept love in my life.

Torts: Really?

Aves:  When you are in the rough and tumble of  interpersonal relationships and interacting with others, our emotions and beliefs are activated. This triggers our old patterns that are in sympathy with those feelings.

Instead of bringing present awareness to the situation we may find that we are thinking and acting based on our past conditioning.  Instantly our feelings, self-esteem and self-talk reverts back to that former time and relationship...

Torts: You don't say ....

Aves: Just being aware that it is occurring helps awaken your silent witness and that presence of pure consciousness is what will eventually overwrite these old thinking patterns.

Torts:  You mean...This isn’t the past, this is now...

Aves:  Yes! Bringing an easy sense of nonjudgmental watchfulness to the situation will correct these pathogenic patterns over time. You don’t need to try to conjure up a sense of self-love in the midst of the situation either. Be neutral and natural and allow the real character of self-love to unfold like the petals of a blooming rose.

Torts: I'm going to try to get my old thinking out of the way.

Aves: Good! When you do, your true Self will naturally shine through ....
