Chris Kunitz Traded by Anaheim Ducks—Pronger or Niedermayer Next?
Is this a good deal, bad deal, or groundwork for something to come?
The Anaheim Ducks traded left wing Chris Kunitz and junior prospect Eric Tangradi to the Pittsburgh Penguins for defenseman Ryan Whitney. On the surface, it appears to serve a need for both teams. Kunitz will be a boost to Sidney Crosby's line for the Penguins, and Whitney gives the Ducks a solid defenseman.
For the Ducks, this appears to be the deal before the deal—trading either Chris Pronger or Scott Niedermayer to a playoff contender.

Bob McKenzie for TSN.com wrote that this move should have been anticipated, a few days ago. McKenzie suggested trading Kunitz, as it would give the Ducks some salary cap room, and an opportunity to ensure Niedermayer returns for another season.
The one thing that shouldn't be forgotten for the Ducks is the fact that this season isn't over, despite where they are in the standings.
Maybe this trade is just as it seems—to help tighten up each team's lineup. Maybe the next best move for the Ducks is not to move at all.
