Mountain West Players at The Combine

JeremyFeb 26, 2009

Well the combine finished up this past week and there was a good showing from the Mountain West schools. The most anticipated workouts were from Utah’s defensive end Paul Kruger, corner back Sean Smith, and then BYU’s wide receiver Austin Collie.

Here were the total participants from the league and click the links to see what the scouts said about each:

The biggest omission was Wyoming’s running back Devin Moore.  Moore actually was in Indianapolis and met with 14 teams at a facility nearby and impressed.  His unofficial 40 team was a 4.43 and 4.41 seconds and that would have put him as the fifth fastest time.  His results were reported from the website Pro Football Talk.

"

Moore also jumped 35 inches vertically, 10 feet broadly, pressed 225 pounds 27 times, ran the short-shuttle in 4.22 and 4.29 seconds, and performed the three-cone drill in 7.14 seconds.

Since Moore resides in Indianapolis, he was permitted to arrange a workout there.  Otherwise, he would have had to wait until the Wyoming Pro Day.

"

Moore could be a sleeper in the draft and with his size he could be a great fit in a west coast offense where he would run, catch the ball, and be part of the return team.

The two highest rated prospects out of the MWC are corner back Sean Smith and defensive end Paul Kruger, both from Utah.  Smith proved his worth by running a 4.5 which is slightly slower then he wanted to run, but right in the line with the other top corners.  Even if his speed is a touch off what corners usually are, Smith has the height of 6-4 and can make up the difference that way.

Kruger under performed in the bench with only 24 reps which was middle of the pack at best and then he ran in the 4.8 range which was not expected.  Kruger played a speed rusher in college and he was aiming for something a tenth or two lower.  SI.com put Kruger in the slider section of players at his position because of his slow 40 time, and that he only did 24 reps in the bench.  They believe that could push Kruger outside the top 45.

As for Austin Collie, he impressed the wide outs in the bench press and broad jump, but his speed is still a question as he ran a 4.6.  Collie was praised upon his route running which could separate him from other wide outs.
