Arsenal Transfer News: 5 Reasons Gunners Fans Won't Miss Robin Van Persie

Timothy RappMay 31, 2018

In the next few days, Arsenal fans are going to be bombarded by how good the Robin van Persie signing makes Manchester United, how the team has become a feeder club and how Arsenal's trophy hopes will once again go wanting this year.

That's what they'll say, Gunners fans. And here's what you should hear: blah, blah, blah, blah and just a little more of blah.

Losing Robin van Persie isn't the end of the world, and below, I've compiled five reasons why we're not going to miss him all that much.

And just remember, if anyone says otherwise, all they're really saying is blah, blah, blah...

Arsenal Got a Lot of Money for a 29-Year-Old With 1 Great Season

If the agreed transfer fee was indeed £24 million (per BBC, "United will pay £22.5m, with a further £1.5m one-off bonus to follow if they win a Premier League or Champions League title in the next four years"), then Arsenal just made an excellent business decision.

That's a lot of money in general, but I think Arsenal's ex-goalkeeper Bob Wilson put it best (via BBC):

"

Obviously it is very good business from the Arsenal point of view. Their perspective is it is £24 million for a 29-year-old who has a history of injury problems and one truly magnificent season in eight. That is great business.

"

Which brings us to point No. 2.

He Was Way Too Healthy Last Season, Will Be Injured Soon Enough

RVP made 47 games for Arsenal last season, the most he ever managed for the Gunners. Only in the 2008-09 season (40 total appearances) has he come anywhere close to that number.

So if RVP comes up hobbling at some point, you'll hear more than a few chuckles in North London. Let the Red Devils enjoy an old tune the Gunners have sung many times before.

An Extension Would Have Been Too Expensive Anyway

If it's true that Van Persie will sign a £200,000-a-week contract with Manchester United (via The Mirror), well, that's just too much for my tastes in the first place. I'd actually like to see the team keep Theo Walcott around or have financial flexibility to extend other young players on the squad.

Let Manchester United just throw money around (Do they really even have money to throw around?) willy-nilly; Arsenal will continue to find and mold young players.

There's no need to start panicking and throwing money around just for the sake of it.

Manchester United May Rue This Signing

Forget the injuries and the huge cost they just paid—how is this going to work on the pitch for the Red Devils?

Will two players used to being the focal point of the attack—Van Persie and Wayne Rooney—be able to coexist on the pitch? How long before grumbles over playing time emerge from the camp of Danny Welbeck or Javier Hernandez? How long before grumbles start coming down from the stands if Van Persie struggles early?

On paper, the Van Persie signing obviously makes Manchester United better. He led the EPL in goals last year (30), after all.

But games are played on grass, not paper, and chemistry matters.

There have been inklings that Van Persie isn't very popular with his Netherlands brethren, and apparently he took it upon himself to disagree with Arsene Wenger's approach to running the club, as well.

So no, this signing does not come without its questions. It could win Manchester United the league title this year.

It could also be a move they regret for years to come.

Do You Really Want a Player Who Decided He Was Bigger Than the Club?

If he didn't want to be at Arsenal any longer, then to hell with him. That's all there is to that. If he didn't believe he and his teammates could compete for trophies, then make room for players who do. If he didn't trust in Wenger, then let him try his luck with Sir Alex Ferguson.

Robin van Persie was not bigger than Arsenal. He did not score his goals without assistance. He did not single-handedly lead Arsenal to a third-place finish on the table (though yes, he was a huge factor in the team's success).

There is plenty of talent on this team, and there is still a chance the team will add to it before August 31st.

RVP is now RIP at the Emirates. And you know what?

So be it.
