Boise State Football: Big East TV Deal Could Be Very Good for the Broncos
With fall camp in full swing for the Broncos, fans are eager to find out how their beloved team will look this season. It is the last year Boise State will be in the Mountain West Conference, and coaches, players and those same fans are hoping they can go out on top.
In 2013 the Broncos will join the Big East Conference, a move that has been criticized by many, including some fans. However, if the latest news about the Big East is true, the doubters and critics could be eating some serious humble pie.
The Broncos made the move to the Big East for a few different reasons, but none bigger than the bottom line. The increased revenue from the Big East will bring millions more into Boise State's pockets and allow them to continue to grow and improve.
Not only that, but with a new television deal on the horizon for the Big East, those pockets could grow even bigger.
Many "experts" were looking at the prospects of the new Big East television deal and were claiming that the deal could be smaller than expected. The Tampa Bay Times reported that some of the estimates were claiming only $6.4 million per school. Which is nothing to shake a stick at, but still far less than what the ACC recently acquired, which was closer to $17 million per school.
However, in a recent interview on WLW in Cincinnati, the associate commissioner of the Big East indicated that the conference is poised to land a huge deal. In the radio interview, Nick Carparelli sounds extremely confident that the Big East could land a deal very close to what the ACC has landed.
The idea is that the Big East is very unique in its large television markets spanning four time zones. Football could be televised all day long on a Saturday—one game after another.
SBNation.com reported that sources indicate the network that could pay such a price for the Big East is NBC. The network is trying hard to crack the college football market and build its new sports network, and according to the article, they could partner the Big East with Notre Dame every Saturday.
If this is true, it means very good things for Boise State and the Big East Conference. Imagine what the Broncos could do if they were to receive at least $10-12 million per season as a football only school. It is incredible what they have done on a relatively small budget, and the sky would be the limit with a heavy increase in funds.
As a member of the Mountain West, the Broncos only receive about $2.9 million per year. Another $8-10 million above that could go a long way.
It is not a done deal yet, but this news has to be encouraging for the Broncos.
The other nugget to come out of that same radio interview was when Nick Carperelli stated that the Big East has a lot of interest from bowl games to place the Big East champion. This could be another great thing for Boise State and the Big East.
If it all comes together, all of those critics, doubters and naysayers could be forced to admit they were wrong, and the Broncos would have a large amount of green to go with all their blue.
