CFB Recruiting 2013: 15 Recruits Truly on Their Way to Good Situations
Every recruit that commits to a school feels that he is on his way to a good situation. Whether it be due to the scheme fit, a coach with a track record for developing that recruit's position, academics, immediate playing time or something else, a good situation is the desired destination for recruits.
This piece will focus on that aspect of college football recruiting and factoring in making a commitment to a school. I have examined the national board and I will give you 15 recruits that are truly on their way to a good situation based on on their commitment.
Let's get started!
Matt Alviti to Northwestern
1 of 13Alviti is an Illinois native that has a gritty playing style at QB that I think will make him a folk hero at Northwestern.
The system fits his skill set as a solid dual threat QB and his toughness will be inspiring to Pat Fitzgerald's team.
I'm not saying he will be the next Tim Tebow, but he has a chance to become that type of figure to Northwestern football.
Peter Kalambayi to Stanford
2 of 13This is a great scheme fit for Kalmbayi because Stanford runs a 3-4 defense and he fits well as an ILB. A 6'2", 235-pound 'backer, Kalambayi has limitations in range and athleticism.
Heading to Stanford and playing inside will definitely help mask his shortcomings and enhance his strengths as a straight ahead run stuffer. This is a great situation for Kalambayi both on the field and academically too.
Hatari Byrd to Oklahoma
3 of 13If there's one thing that Mike Stoops knows, it's how to coach up DBs. A former defensive back himself that played in the NFL, Stoops knows how to develop back end defenders well.
Byrd is a big DB at 6'2", 200-pounds that likely will end up as a SS for Stoops at Oklahoma. Also, Oklahoma is known for having good SS-Rover types like Roy Williams and Tony Jefferson.
This looks like a great situation for Byrd if you ask me.
Aaron Zwahlen to Hawaii
4 of 13Hawaii is known to be an extremely pass happy school, so any QB would be wise to give the Warriors a look. Yet, things have changed just a bit as Norm Chow is now the head coach and he'll likely bring his system to the island.
Zwahlen is in a good situation here, as he has the size at 6'3", 190-pounds and arm talent to do great things for Chow, who's known to develop great QBs.
Heading to Hawaii to learn from Norm Chow as a QB? Sounds wonderful to me.
Jalin Marshall to Ohio State
5 of 13Remember when Urban Meyer was at Florida and he used to have Percy Harvin do a little bit of everything? That's how I think he'll use Marshall at Ohio State because the 6'0", 190-pounder can play QB, RB and WR.
This is a good situation for Marshall as he can stay home, go play for the Buckeyes and see his offensive skill set be exploited in an offense that fits him greatly.
LaQuvionte Gonzalez to Texas A&M
6 of 13Kevin Sumlin is looking for speedy WRs to help execute his high octane, pass-oriented offense at Texas A&M. Clearly, he's hit a home run in Gonzalez who's one of the fastest players in the country.
At 5'11" and in the 165-pound range, Gonzalez will head to A&M to play with several talented potential QBs and catch a ton of balls for the Aggies. His speed could help him do some Patrick Edwards-type of things for Kevin Sumlin.
Thomas Tyner and Dontre Wilson to Oregon
7 of 13Speaking of speed, Tyner and Wilson also possess a lot of it. Tyner is bigger at 6'0" and almost 210-pounds but could actually be faster than the 5'10", 180-pound Wilson.
Heading to Oregon and to a coach that recruits like he doesn't have an abundance of speed is a shrewd move on both recruit's parts. They will fit into the offense well in Eugene and their speed will make them both productive.
Adam Breneman to Penn State
8 of 13I know that heading anywhere close to Penn State isn't the best look right now, however there are still perks at Penn State, especially for a pass catching TE.
Breneman is a 6'5", 230-pounder that can catch like a WR, has great size, length and solid speed vs. LBs. He's heading to Happy Valley to play for Bill O'Brien who comes from the Patriots, you know that team that has Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez?
I'd imagine O'Brien knows a thing or two about developing TEs and getting them the football.
Kevin Olsen to Miami
9 of 13This is another situation that has perks even though sanctions are coming. Miami is a good place, especially for a solid, smart and steady QB prospect from New Jersey.
Kevin Olsen is that kinda QB and this is a good situation for him because he will be the QB that Al Golden builds around. What's wrong with heading to Miami to toss the rock for The U as the face of the franchise?
Robbie Rhodes to Baylor
10 of 13Baylor basically struck gold here because I think they have a true gem in Rhodes. Kendall Wright did some damage in Waco and I think Rhodes may be more talented than Wright was at this stage.
The offense will throw the ball on any down and Rhodes has the potential to be a No. 1 WR. The situation is good because Rhodes gets to stay home, go to a school where he can be "The Man" and catch a lot of passes.
That's a great situation to me.
Max Redfield and Su'a Cravens to USC
11 of 13Both of these players are headed to ideal situations at USC because of each other. They fit so well together as a safety tandem because that have contrasting play styles.
Redfield is more of a roaming FS type that likes to play with athleticism and speed to jump passing lanes and make interceptions on the back end.
Cravens can play that role too, but he's better as a SS type that can stick his nose in the box and play the pass as an underneath zone defender. These two should make a fine back end tandem at USC.
Shane Morris to Michigan
12 of 13Morris is a Michigan native so he's already very popular around the state. He plays the glory position of Michigan and is one of the best in the nation.
He's charismatic, is a good leader and has great arm talent. He's more of a classic and traditional QB than Denard Robinson, so there is a chance he can play as a true freshman next year when Al Borges moves fully towards a traditional offense.
The headliner for a Michigan recruiting class? As a QB from the state? Already receiving high marks for being a leader? With a chance to play early? I'd sign up for that too.
Christian Hackenberg to Penn State
13 of 13Surely Penn State can't play in a bowl game for the next four years. The mood around the program is down and it's going to be awhile before they are highly competitive again.
However, Bill O'Brien will bring his offense from New England to Happy Valley. As a QB who wants to get to NFL, this is a great hing because you can learn an NFL offense from a coach who ran the same offense with one of the best QBs of all time in Tom Brady.
Hackenberg is sticking with his commitment to Penn State, where he'll be the most talented QB on the roster the moment he steps on campus. Early playing time is not out of the question at all and this is an excellent situation for Hackenberg's development as a QB.
