Philadelphia Eagles Would Be a Logical Landing Spot for Marvin Harrison

Bob CunninghamFeb 23, 2009

It has come out recently that Marvin Harrison wants out of Indy.

After a spectacular 13-year career in the blue and white, Harrison would like to move on after it become apparent that he and the Colts would be unable to reach an agreement to restructure his contract.

With the free agent market slim at best, a player like Harrison becomes a viable option.

The logical landing spot? Philadelphia.

Philly has been looking for a good veteran wide receiver to help guide the likes of Jason Avant, Hank Baskett, Reggie Brown, and more importantly DeSean Jackson.

All have shown flashes and are obviously talented players, but need someone to help them reach the next level.

Harrison could do just that.

Harrison is without a doubt one of the best receivers that this league has seen.

And while his career may be winding down, he could still help a team like the Eagles.

First off, too much is made about the receiving core of the Eagles. They have a lot of talented, young players. The only problem is they don't have a big name to attract attention.

Regardless of how poor it would appear Harrison's last two years have been, he can still be that player. Harrison's name still warrants enough respect that a safety would more than likely be told to keep an eye on him.

This leaves more opportunities for guys like Jackson and Avant: Playmakers who just haven't been quite able to reach the next level of their game.

The bonus here is that Harrison, while his name gains respect, would also be a decent playmaker for Philly.

When healthy, he is still an above average wide receiver in this league.

A year or two of mentoring the young receivers on this team would do them wonders. Harrison would show a guy like Jackson how to make the tough catches and do all of that on the field, and also how to behave off of it.

Harrison is an oddity among NFL wide receivers in that you will never see him on SportsCenter for some ridiculous end zone celebration or saying something to attract attention to himself.

He goes out, does his job, and does it well.

He would be a fantastic addition as a coach-on-the-field for these guys while helping the Eagles realize their dream of a Super Bowl victory.

Another added element that makes this a good move for both sides: Not only is Harrison a current resident of Philadelphia, but he also was the go-to target for a guy named Donovan McNabb during his early days in Syracuse.
