Bundesliga Matchday 21: Bayern Lose Third League Game as Hamburg Go Top

Samrin HasibFeb 23, 2009

Biggest Upsets

FC Bayern Munchen 1:2 Koeln

Bayern supporters have received an apology from Michael Rensing due to this result. Bayern slumped to their third league loss out of four and thus are lying out of the Champions League spots.

A perfectly superb Miroslav Klose header was ruled out for offside incorrectly and had that goal stood, matters may have been different for FCB. Yet the performance on the whole was below par. Ehret and Brosinki scored for Koeln.

Despite Daniel Van Buyten pulling one back for Bayern, it was too little too late for FCB. At the moment Bayern have to prepare themselves for a trip to Lisbon.

Energie Cottbus 2:1 Werder Bremen

I am not quite sure whether this is an upset as Werder are used to losing to relegation-threatened sides. Werder’s Hugo Almeida opened the scoring in the second half.

While Clemens Fritz was busy demanding a free-kick instead of trying to win the ball back, Iliev equalized. Dimitar Rangelov finally finished off Werder as he scored the winner right at the death.

Table topping Results:

Wolfsburg 2:1 Hertha Berlin.

Hertha’s rule at the top of the Bundesliga was short-lived. They slumped to a defeat against Wolfsburg.

Hertha, in fact broke the deadlock right after the hour mark through Cicero but two headers from on-fire Edin Dzeko won Wolfsburg the match. Thus Wolfsburg climbs to sixth in the table.

Leverkusen 1:2  Hamburger SV

This match promised to be an entertaining one. It was a former Bayern man who however won Hamburg the match. Marcell Jansen opened the scoring and Patrick Helmes equalized. The first half ended 0-0.

However, Hamburg were determined to take advantage of the title-contenders' slip-ups. A Guerrero cross led to another close-range Jansen effort which ended up in the back of the net.

Jerome Boateng got sent off in the 86th minute, but Hamburg held on for the win. Thus, they now lead the pack.

Confidence- Boosting Result:

Borussia Moenchengladbach 3:2 Hannover

Borussia are still bottom, but they gave themselves a confidence boost with a win over Hannover. Alex Baumjohann opened the scoring for Borussia and “wunder-kind” Marin added a second.

The visitors pulled one back through Sergio Pinto while Christian Schulz equalized in the 77th minute. However, Oliver Neuville had the last laugh as he took advantage of the confusion in Hannover’s defence and fired home the winner.

The Derby Outcome:

Schalke 1:1 Borussia Dortmund

The Ruhr-valley Derby this time was more about points than bragging rights. Schalke opened the scoring through a superb Kevin Kuranyi bicycle kick which convinced me that the German has some talent in him.

A Mohammed Zidan header leveled the match in the 80th minute as both sides had to settle for a draw.

Match of the Week:

VfB Stuttgart 3:3 Hoffenheim

If you needed entertainment, this is the match you should have watched. Hoffenheim took the lead through Demba Ba but Cacau was on hand to equalize after a pass from Mario Gomez.

“Super Mario” then gave Stuttgart the lead through a classy header but once again Ba equalized. Mario Gomez once again gave Stuttgart the lead through an excellent goal. He volleyed the ball over Daniel Haas and quite surprisingly, it found the back of the net.

Demba Ba, however, completed his hat trick after beating Serdar Tasci to the ball and firing past Lehmaan. The Hoff could have won it at the death but Sejad Salihovic fired well over the bar from the penalty-spot.

Other Results:

Karlsruher 0:1 Eintracht Frankfurt:

A Caio goal was enough to sink Karlsruhe further into the drop zone.

Bielefeld 1:1 Bochum:

Bochum backed up last week’s derby win with an away draw against Arminia. A Diego Klimowicz goal was cancelled out by an Andre Mijatovic header. Klimowicz himself was sent off due to a second yellow card into the second half.

The table:

HSV 42

Hoffenheim 40

Hertha 40

Bayern 38

Bayer 36

News and interesting fixtures

First of all, let me start off with Bremen. They may have been getting battered and bruised in the league, yet they have done well in Europe. At the Weser, Bremen were 1-0 down due to a Filippo Inzaghi goal for most of the match.

Yet, Diego kept their hopes alive by scoring in he 82nd minute. A highly interesting encounter awaits at the San Siro.

Stuutgart lost their first European match under Markus Babel. An opener from Szabolics Huszti was cancelled out by a superb Mario Gomez strike. However future Bayern- man Anatoliy Tymoschuk won Zenit the game.

As the game was held in Russia, Stuttgart have an away goal to themselves and the advantage of playing at home in the second leg of the tie.

Wolfsburg and Hamburg had completely different fortunes. The Wolves went down 2-0 to PSG whereas Hamburg shattered NEC Nijmenen with goals via Mladen Petric, Piotr Trochowski and Ivica Olic in the Netherlands.

Bayern are heading to Sporting this week and they better up their game as Sporting can cause Bayern a headache. I would like to end here with a Lukas Podolski statement after he signed for Koeln “I knew Bayern would leave me out in the cold…
