NBA Snoozes into Summer

Ron JohnsonJun 21, 2007
IconAs I had a beer at a local bar, someone whispered to me that the San Antonio Spurs had won their fourth NBA Title. Problem is, the only people who actually watched the game were the celebs in attendance: Tom Brady, Brady Quinn, Terrell Owens, and that chick from Desperate Housewives.
Someone please explain to me why the media spent more time talking about some woman named Eva than the actual NBA Finals. Is this what pro basketball has come to— Here's how the NBA slumped and stumbled its way into the summer of '07...
Destiny Fulfilled

It was supposed to be the Series that Saved the League.

In three simple words: What a crock!

Rumor had it the Cavs could give the 'Three Amigos' a run for their money. Instead, the Spurs destroyed LeBron James and Co. en route to their fourth title in nine years.

The 2007 NBA Finals had lower ratings than last year's World Series. The analysts seemed more interested in Eva Longoria—or in Chad Johnson racing a horse—than in how the Spurs dominated the middle and kept King James in check.

In all honesty, did anyone doubt the Spurs were going to win it all after they knocked off Phoenix? Did anyone really watch intently? Did anyone really care?

No?

Good. Let's move on.

Hang Time in Sac-Town

Reggie Theus—who is this guy, exactly?

22 years ago, Theus scored the first basket in Sacramento Kings' history. Now, the Kings are calling him home.

Theus replaces Eric Musselman in Sac-Town after a stint with Rick Pitino at Louisville and a stay at New Mexico State. Stan Van Gundy had been the frontrunner for the job until the Billy Donovan saga unfolded.

Theus has at least two good players in Ron Artest and Mike Bibby. And here's a shocker for Kings fans: Artest is actually excited about the hire.

How long the goodwill lasts remains to be seen.

Plot Twists in the Oden-Durant Show

All the hype surrounding Greg Oden and Kevin Durant just took a turn for the better...and the worse.

Word out of Portland is that Oden didn't live up to expectations in a workout with the Trailblazers. Still, everyone's calling him a can't-miss force.

The good news: Oden has all the potential in the world. The bad news: His body could be his biggest flaw.

Don't let Stephen A. Smith get involved in this he ll spend way too much time kissing Oden's tail. If Oden gets into better shape during the offseason, he won't have to worry about much. Besides, with Nate McMillan teaching him some ol' school tricks, his Buckeye flavor could get a little Pac Coast spice.

At this point, G.O. is still heading to Oregon, while his counterpart from Longhorn country, D-Rant, is heading to Seattle. Or is it Oklahoma City? Or Kansas City?

With the draft less than a week away, the two most talked-about college stars have to bring their A games to showcase sessions because if they don't, there are plenty of other young studs waiting to fill the void.

Until the draft, or the next time Kobe blogs about his PMS, the NBA is on the backburner. Hopefully, no one takes KB's muzzle off.
