Could Any Quarterback Have Won the Super Bowl for the Steelers?

Nick SignorelliFeb 22, 2009

Since I have been writing here on the Bleacher Report, I have noticed two things that really stand out.  Steeler Nation is as strong as ever, and how much disrespect Big Ben gets from other fans.

One of the comments I hear the most is that any QB could have led the Pittsburgh Steelers to Super Bowl #6.

I am going to go through each team and explain why most of them could not have done it.

AFC North

Cleveland Browns: Who was their starting QB in week 17?  Oh, that's right, Ken Dorsey.  0 arm strength, 0 mobility.  He would have been dead behind our line.

Cincinnati Bengals: I wont talk about the people that were playing for Cincy last year.  Carson Palmer is the QB, and, if healthy, could have led the Steelers to the Super Bowl.

Baltimore Ravens: Joe Flacco showed he is going to be a good QB in the NFL.  He really showed his inexperience in the playoffs.  He may be a good QB one day, but not good enough to lead a Super Bowl run this year.

AFC South

Indianapolis Colts: Peyton Manning would be killed behind our line.  He has no mobility at all, and does not play very good when he gets hit a lot.  Not a chance.

Jacksonville Jaguars: David Garrard is decent, but showed he is average at best.  Not much of a chance there.

Tennessee Titans: Kerry Collins is a good QB, but good doesn't get you a Super Bowl victory.  Sorry.

Houston Texans: Their QB's were both injured numerous times through the year.  Neither would have survived in Pittsburgh.

AFC West

San Diego Chargers: Phillip Rivers probably could have won the Super Bowl if he were our QB.

Denver Broncos: Jay Cutler would have what it takes to win it all in Pittsburgh.

Kansas City Chiefs: Not a chance.

Oakland Raiders: JaMarcus Russell is a long way from being Super Bowl quality.  Not a chance.

AFC East

Miami Dolphins: Chad Pennington is not mobile enough to survive behind our line.

New England Patriots: Matt Cassell could have won it in Pittsburgh.

NY Jets: Brett Favre doesn't have it anymore.  I would have to say no to him.

Buffalo Bills: Again, injury concerns mean neither QB would have survived in Pittsburgh.

NFC North

Chicago Bears: Kyle Orton and Rex Grossman are both horrible.  They even prove that a good D does not guarantee a great team.

Minnesota Vikings: Again, no steady starter to compare to.

Detroit Lions: You have to be kidding me.

Green Bay Packers: Aaron Rodgers played great until he signed his big contract, then he went downhill.

NFC South

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Jeff Garcia possibly could have won in Pittsburgh.  50-50 chance.

Atlanta Falcons: Matt Ryan is going to be good.  But there is a reason that no rookie QB has won the Super Bowl.  If Marino couldn't do it, Ryan couldn't.

Carolina Panthers: Jake Delhomme chokes under pressure, like he did this year. No way.

New Orleans Saints: It must be horrible to almost break the record for most passing yards in a single season and still not be able to make the playoffs.  Drew Brees is great, and could have led the Steelers to the victory.

NFC West

Seattle Seahawks: Matt Hasselbeck was too injured to even have a chance.

Arizona Cardinals: Is it Kurt Warner who makes the WR's great or the other way around?  If Ben had Larry Fitzgerald and Anquon Bolden, everyone would be calling him elite.  Warner would die behind our line.

San Francisco 49ers: The QB carousel went round and round, and no good QB's came out of it.

St. Louis Rams: Marc Bulger is decent, but his career is getting killed.  He would be better in Pittsburgh, but not Super Bowl caliber.

NFC East

Washington Redskins: Jason Campbell played great until they played Pittsburgh.  He does not do well against a good D.  The Ravens would have killed him if he were in Pittsburgh, so the answer would be no.

NY Giants: Eli is a lot like his brother.  A little more mobile (and I mean a LITTLE).  Still, he would never work in Pittsburgh.

Philadelphia Eagles:McNabb would be good enough to win it all as a Steeler.

Dallas Cowboys: I saved the best for last.  Romo would be killed in Pittsburgh.  He has no confidence at all.  Behind our line, he would be in the fetal position on the sideline sucking his thumb and crying for Jessica!

So there you have it, of the 31 other NFL teams, I really believe that only five other QB's could have had the success that Ben had.
