Notre Dame Football: Tommy Rees and Carlo Calabrese Suspended for Season Opener
The Notre Dame quarterback controversy just took on a new twist, per an announcement from the university.
According to statements from Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly, quarterback Tommy Rees and linebacker Carlo Calabrese have been suspended for the Irish's season-opening game against Navy in Dublin, Ireland on Sept. 1.
Neither player will be making the trip to Dublin, which sets up for the Irish offense to be led by either Andrew Hendrix, Everett Golson or true freshman Gunner Kiel.
As for the suspended players, Brian Kelly had a short, succinct explanation of the events that landed Rees and Calabrese in this position.
""Our players understand that it’s a privilege to be associated with the University of Notre Dame and its football program, but with that comes great responsibility. Carlo and Tommy put themselves in a situation that when given a choice between two distinct paths, they responded with a set of poor decisions. This conduct was inconsistent with my expectations for our football program – especially our veteran, team leaders. Carlo and Tommy will not travel with the team to Ireland and can attempt to climb the depth chart following the conclusion of their respective suspensions."
"
Calabrese is next scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 10, while Rees is scheduled to appear on Aug. 20 for a hearing surrounding the possibility of paying restitution.
