Jordyn Wieber: Why American Is a Lock to Bring Home More Medals

Alex HallJun 7, 2018

Top United States women's gymnast Jordyn Wieber experienced heartbreak before gold in London, but Team USA fans can expect more images of her smiling with gold around her neck as these games continue.

Wieber's first competition at the 2012 Summer Games was the individual all-around qualifications, in which she stunningly failed to reach the finals. U.S. coach Bela Karolyi was especially shocked by the results, saying to NBC's Al Michaels:

"

What a travesty! How someone can afford to cut one of the best gymnasts?

Wieber was cut from the finals because the rules state that only two members from each nation's team can compete in the finals. Despite Wieber placing fourth, teammates Aly Raisman and Gabby Douglas placed higher. Therefore, they will represent Team USA at the all-around finals on Aug. 2.

Questions began to rise as to whether the inexperienced Olympic gymnast would be able to regain her composure in time to excel in the team event.

Those questions were erased quickly during the competition, as Wieber helped her country secure its first team gold medal since the 1996 Atlanta Games.

Wieber could have crumbled after stumbling out of the gates in London, but she was able to do what all the Olympic greats do: forget about the mistakes and focus on the competitions still to come.

The Michigan-born Olympian still has the floor exercise as well as the uneven bars finals ahead of her. Those are the same two competitions she took gold in at the 2011 Visa National Championships.

Wieber also added to her ever-growing medal competition at the most recent World Championships, where she also took home the gold medal in the floor exercise.

The uneven bars will be difficult for Wieber to medal in with Russia's Aliya Mustafina, teammate Gabby Douglas and Great Britain's Beth Tweddle all in the field. Still, the confidence gained from already grabbing a gold medal should help her calm the nerves before the final.

The floor is where Wieber has the best chance to add to her medal count, placing sixth in the qualifiers heading into the final. This is an event that she has been dominant in the most recent years, and she should have no problem finding her way to the podium after putting on a masterful performance.
