Florida State Football: Mario Edwards Landing Seminoles Job Is No Big Deal

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution recently revealed that the father of 2012's prized signee, Mario Edwards Jr., was hired by Florida State as its director of player development.

In light of the Robert Nkemdiche ordeal, the notion of package deals has become more of a mainstream topic, and Edwards Sr. getting the job, according to many folks, fits this ideal.

Edwards Sr., a star in his own right at Florida State, got the job in July—five months after his son signed on with the Seminoles.

Not exactly the same as Ole Miss signing the elder Nkemdiche, Denzel, to use as a leg up on recruiting his standout little brother. Not the same as Clemson piling a host of Grayson High School ballplayers in the boat to stack the deck for keeping Nkemdiche. Not the same as Georgia hiring Robert Nkemdiche's former coach, Daryl Jones, as its director of on-campus recruiting as it recruited the Loganville defensive end. 

Certainly folks could get worked into a tizzy over this, as Jimbo Fisher's staff added a staffer that might have given it a leg up on landing the nation's top prospect. However, they shouldn't.

Terrell Buckley, the Florida State standout cornerback who previously held the position Edwards Sr. occupies, left his position in early January. In July, the Seminoles replaced one former Florida State stud ballplayer with another.

In other words, Edwards Sr. is the type of guy that you want in the player development position. He understands what the players are going through on a daily basis. He's seen the highest of the highs, and he saw his hopes for a long career playing ball dashed in a relative instant.

He knows the culture of Florida State and the importance of players getting their degrees and representing the school.

Good hire for the Seminoles, and whether it helped them land Edwards Jr. or not, they are far from raising eyebrows with this move.
