Olympic Gymnastics 2012 Medals: Ranking Team USA's Best Shots at Gold
After an eventful and shocking women's gymnastics preliminaries day where Jordyn Wieber did not make the all-around finals, it's important to look at all of the event finals.
Now that all of the qualifiers have been made, Team USA still has several chances for gold in individual events.
It might be bold saying this, but it is possible the Americans could have a gold-medal sweep.
Team USA has eight significant shots for a gold medal on the different events and the all-around.
Here we outline the best options, from the long shots to the practically inevitable.
8. Gabby Douglas Beam
1 of 8It is a bit ironic how Gabby Douglas' strongest performance during qualifications was on beam.
She finished third in the standings on an apparatus where she always seems to struggle to stay on, even at the Olympic Trials. At the Visa Championships, she fell off the apparatus, which cost her the all-around title.
Although her shots at gold seem slim, her third-place finish should not be overlooked. This could give Douglas the confidence she needs on beam to propel her to a gold medal.
7. Aly Raisman, Beam
2 of 8Aly Raisman's strong performance during qualifications proved that she is a champion and anything is possible for her.
There's no doubt in my mind that Raisman could win gold in every event she qualified in. Beam is the slimmest option though.
Raisman placed fifth on the beam at qualifications and it will be difficult for her to power past China's Sui Lu and Russia's Viktoria Komova.
However, she has the potential to do just that.
6. Aly Raisman, All-Around
3 of 8Aly Raisman did amazing during qualifications and suddenly everybody is on team Raisman, and picking Raisman for the all-around gold. Talk about bandwagon fans.
Yes, Raisman placed second in the all-around during qualifications, which means she has a strong shot at winning the gold medal. She needs to do even better to defeat Russia's Viktoria Komova for the title.
Nobody except Raisman, and maybe national team coordinator Marta Karolyi, thought that she'd be competing for the U.S. in the all-around.
She is a steady performer but does not usually perform as well as she did on Sunday. Douglas has consistently beat her in the all-around.
The uneven bars are also her weakness and she can't let that bring her down.
If she can manage a repeat performance, then and only then will she have a chance at all-around gold.
5. Gabby Douglas, Uneven Bars
4 of 8Gabby Douglas is known for her prowess on the uneven bars.
The height she gets on her release moves is what gave her the nickname "The Flying Squirrel."
She's by far the best American on this event, not just for her height but because of her skill on her pirouettes.
It was surprising that she placed sixth in the event during qualifications. She has to watch out for Great Britain's Beth Tweddle, who performed a fabulous routine during qualifications in front of the home crowd.
4. Aly Raisman, Floor
5 of 8Before the all-around drama and Raisman's sudden success, floor was seemingly Raisman's only chance at a gold medal.
It remains her best chance at gold. She is known for her athleticism and consistency. One may wonder if her routine does not have enough artistry to astound the judges though.
3. Jordyn Wieber, Floor
6 of 8No one ever slotted Jordyn Wieber for an individual event medal.
She was the favorite to win the all-around gold because she is steady on all four events, with no astounding strengths.
Wieber did not particularly excel in floors at Tokyo last year, but she still has a strong routine.
All the rules have been thrown out the window after Raisman and Douglas beat Wieber out.
This is Wieber's only shot at an individual event medal and ironically she's going against Raisman. She is going to get her revenge.
2. Gabby Douglas, All-Around
7 of 8Douglas has proven herself as a strong and consistent all-around competitor.
She defeated Wieber in the event at Olympic trials and narrowly missed out of the title at Visa Championships. She has what it takes to win the all-around gold.
Douglas is strong on all four events and did better than usual in the balance beam during team qualifications.
People worry about her consistency especially because she is a newcomer on the international stage; however, she proved fierce during the qualification rounds.
If Douglas' sparks of brilliance lasts, then she could win the all-around title.
1. McKayla Maroney, Vault
8 of 8First, I must acknowledge that I have openly stated how McKayla Maroney is trouble because of her toe injury.
I still think it's an issue, but that doesn't stop the facts: If Maroney hits her vault then she will win the gold medal. She is the best in the world on the event.
She is the defending world champion, and has the most difficult vault. Maroney led the qualifications by nearly half a point on Sunday.
Maroney knows she is only on the team because of her vaulting skills.
She told NBCOlympics.com: "If I do my job I know I can get the gold medal. That’s what they picked me to be on the team for, so I need to be confident about that."
Maroney is the heavy favorite because she can consistently hit the Amanar, which is one of the most difficult vaults in the sport.
