London 2012 Olympics Schedule: American Contenders to Watch on Day 5
As more medals are handed out each day, dozens of Americans are working to get their hands on Olympic gold.
Local stars have already secured wins in a variety of events. Kim Rhode set a world record with her impressive display in skeet shooting, winning a medal in her fifth straight Olympic games. In the pool, Ryan Lochte and Dana Vollmer have also won in the opening days.
In day five, there are plenty of opportunities for competitors from the United States to win their respective event.
Women's Team Gymnastics
Although the United States team has not won the team all-around since 1996, this squad could be the group to break the streak.
Gabby Douglas and Aly Raisman were so good in the qualifying round that defending world champion Jordyn Wieber did not even qualify for the individual finals. Between these three talented girls and vault specialist McKayla Maroney, the talent is there to defeat China, Russia and everyone else in the field.
Men's Skeet
As Kim Rhode dominates the female side of the competition, Vincent Hancock is just as good in the men's group.
Hancock set the current world record of 125 points in 2007, and now he leads all competitors through three rounds in the 2012 games. He is almost automatic with his accuracy, and it would be a surprise if he does not leave with a gold medal.
Swimming
There are four medals up for grabs on this day, and the Americans have a solid chance at all of them.
In the women's 200-meter freestyle, Allison Schmitt should be the favorite, but teenage sensation Missy Franklin could be right behind her. World record holder Ariana Kukors is on track to win the 200 individual medley as well.
The most exciting race of the night will be the men's 4x200 freestyle. The United States team is looking to recover from the second-place finish in the previous relay, but it will be challenged by France once again.
