Virginia Tech Recruiting: 5-Star CB Will Continue Hokies' Great DB Tradition
Kendall Fuller, a 5-star cornerback out of Maryland, has committed to the Hokies (as reported by ESPN), which should be music to the ears of the fans of Virginia Tech. If his commitment sticks, which it likely will, he becomes the fourth Fuller to attend Virginia Tech, and he has the potential to be the best of the bunch.
As you see in the video, he is a natural defensive back. He brings length to the table and has the physicality that a zone scheme like Bud Foster's truly requires. Fuller can run, he can play man coverage, he's comfortable in zone and he is active against the run.
The Hokies, one of the few teams to still play the field and boundary system, will get use out of Kendall Fuller at both spots. Early on expect to see him inserted as the boundary corner because he has the body and skills to be a player in the run game. As he gets used to the speed of the college game and grows his skills, look for Fuller to be that field corner that the Hokies love.
Virginia Tech has a great tradition of putting outstanding defensive backs on the field, time and again. This year Antone Exum and Kyle Fuller, Kendall's brother, continue that tradition. Bringing in the youngest Fuller brother will not only continue the tradition but he's got a shot to have legitimate on field impact.
If Kendall Fuller is ready to play early. Exum can move back to the safety spot, a place where he was a stud for the Hokies in 2011, and Foster can truly get his best athletes on the field at the same time.
As with all recruiting, it is a marathon. While it seems Fuller is a lock for Virginia Tech given the family ties, nothing is set in stone and Frank Beamer has to keep the elite defensive back in the boat. Clemson, the school that missed out on Fuller, is building an amazing class and the Tigers will most certainly continue to sit in Fuller's ear; as will the Michigan Wolverines, a team that needs help at the defensive back spot.
