Alec NathanJun 1, 2018

The 2012 London Olympic games are underway, and the group stage of men’s soccer has not disappointed thus far. We have seen Spain bow out early with two consecutive losses, while some surprising squads are inching closer to securing spots in the knockout rounds.

The favorites to emerge from their group, Mexico currently sit atop Group B alongside South Korea, each having secured four points. The other competitors in Group B, Switzerland and Gabon, have each totaled one point.

Here's all you need to know about Mexico vs. Switzerland at the 2012 Olympic games.

History

Neither Mexico nor Switzerland have a storied history in Olympic soccer, but that doesn't mean greatness can't be achieved in 2012.

According to NBCOlympics.com, Switzerland has medaled only once in men's soccer, capturing the silver medal in Paris in 1924. Although the Swiss have not had any recent Olympic success, their second-place finish at the 2011 U-21 European Championships bodes well for their prospects in the near future.

As for Mexico, they have never medaled at the Olympics. With that being said, they appear to have a very strong chance of doing so at this year's games. Possessing a roster loaded with young talent, expect Mexico to be firmly in the mix for a medal as the knockout rounds get underway during the first week of August.

Players to Watch

Giovani dos Santos: With world-renowned striker Javier Hernandez absent from the 2012 games, Giovani Dos Santos has assumed the role of the primary goal scoring threat for Mexico.

Still just 23 years old, Dos Santos is a star in the making, although his statistics with his European club would appear to indicate otherwise. Dos Santos failed to receive consistent minutes under Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp, but could be in line for a bump in playing time with new manager Andre Villas-Boas.

Dos Santos has netted two goals already in group play, scoring twice in Mexico’s 2-0 win over Gabon.

Diego Benaglio: When analyzing Switzerland's U-23 roster, not many names jump off the page. However, one player added as an over-age selection could have a profound impact.

28-year-old staring goalkeeper Diego Benaglio will be key to a Swiss revival at the 2012 Olympics games. The starting keeper for VfL Wolfsburg in the German Bundesliga, Benaglio has established himself as a steady presence in net.

In 32 starts last season, Benaglio recorded 106 saves, good for ninth in all of the Bundesliga. With a squad that isn't exactly replete with offensive weapons, Benaglio could be key to a Swiss upset

Prediction: Mexico win 2-0.

In this meeting of contrasting styles, Mexico's offense figures to be a tall order for a fairly stout Swiss defense. Being the final game of Group B play, Switzerland will be desperate for a win, which could open up the field a bit, allowing Mexico to see some extra opportunities at goal.

Mexico is in prime position to take a draw and still advance to the knockout stage, but I expect an outright victory from Dos Santos and the Mexicans.
