US Olympic Gymnastics Team 2012: Predicting Individual All-Around Results
The U.S. Olympic gymnastics team features four of the world's top gymnasts heading into the men's and women's individual all-around events.
Aly Raisman and Gabby Douglas will compete for the women, and Danell Leyva and Jon Orozco will compete for the men. All four have the skills and determination to come away with the gold medal in their respective competitions.
With that in mind, I'll give you my predictions for how they'll fare.
Aly Raisman
Nobody except Raisman and perhaps her head coach, Marta Karolyi, thought that she'd be competing for the U.S. women's team in the all-around. Most of us thought that Jordyn Wieber would join Douglas on the women's side.
That didn't stop Raisman from posting the second-highest individual score during the women's team competition. Her score of 60.391 was second only to Russia's Victoria Komova, who scored a 60.632, according to London2012.com.
She'll need to be at the top of her game to defeat Komova in the all-around, but Raisman has the steady demeanor to get the job done under pressure.
Prediction: Raisman wins the gold.
Gabby Douglas
While it was a surprise that Raisman got in over Wieber, nobody's surprised to see this smiling 16-year-old sensation make her way into the all-around.
Douglas defeated Wieber in this event at the Olympic trials. She is a strong competitor in every single event, though her best event by far is the uneven bars.
Unlike Raisman, though, Douglas is a relative newcomer to the international stage. I worry about her getting swept away in the moment, and I believe she'll succumb to the pressure.
Prediction: Douglas finishes in fourth place, behind the Russian duo of Komova and Aliya Mustafina.
Danell Leyva
Leyva has been an absolute beast so far in these Olympic Games. His performances of late have consistently been dominant, and he's peaking at just the right moment.
Leyva's individual score of 91.265 was significantly better than any other male gymnast in the team competitions, and he has the inside track to win the all-around.
That said, the gold-medal-winning score from the 2008 Summer Games was an incredible 94.575, posted by China's Yang Wei, according to Sports-Reference.com. Leyva will need to continue stepping his game up to secure this year's gold medal.
Prediction: Leyva puts on a clinic to win gold.
John Orozco
Orozco is the U.S. men's gymnastics team's most consistent all-around performer. What I mean by that is that he is solid in every single event. Leyva is undoubtedly the world's best on the high bar and one of the top parallel bar artists, but Orozco is just rock solid across the board.
That said, he isn't as good as Leyva when it comes to putting up the points.
To this point, Orozco's score of 90.597 during qualifying puts him in fourth place overall, behind Leyva, Russia's David Belyavskiy and Germany's Fabian Hambuchen. He isn't far behind Belyavskiy and Hambuchen, though, and he could give either one of them a run for their money in the final.
Prediction: Orozco wins the bronze.
