Olympic Swimming Results 2012: Day 2 Recap, Top Times & Medal Standings

Mike ShiekmanJun 4, 2018

Sunday’s Olympic action featured several swimming finals with gold medals to be had. The events culminated with France getting revenge from 2008 in the 4x100-meter relay (3:09:93), while Ryan Lochte and the USA faded down the stretch for the silver.

The relay indicated that perhaps Lochte and Phelps aren’t going in opposite directions after all. Phelps swam brilliantly in the U.S.’ second leg, while Lochte could not grasp the lead facing a dead heat against the French.

But not all was lost for the Americans.

What’s Next- A Look Ahead to Day 3

Men’s 200 Freestyle - 2:41 ET

Lochte disappointed in U.S. relay on Sunday, but he won’t have to wait long to redeem himself. He will be expected to take gold against a Phelps-less in the 200-meter freestyle.

Women’s 100 Backstroke- 2:49 ET

Another young American star is on the cusp of a bright Olympic showing. Missy Franklin will look to fill the void of Natalie Coughlin’ absence and win the 100-meter backstroke event. A gold-medal win would be Franklin’s first individual medal, as she took the bronze on the women’s 4x100 relay.

Women’s 100-Meter Breaststroke- 3:13 ET

Perhaps the best odds out of any American swimming in the field tomorrow is for Rebecca Soni, the no. 1 women’s breaststroke swimmer in the world. Soni has yet to win a gold in this event, losing to Australian Leisel Jones in 2008. She will have a chance to beat out Jones too, who’s also in the field.
