Olympic Updates 2012: Analysis of Top Early-Day 2 Events and Athletes
Check here for updates and analysis from early-day 2 events from the 2012 Olympics Games in London.
Already, several big results are in as Day 2 of the London Olympics presses on. Let’s take a look at some of the best action of the morning.
Men's basketball — Brazil vs. Australia
Brazil, named as a possible spoiler to Team USA’s gold medal run, narrowly defeated the Australian national team by a final score of 75-71.
It was over when Marcelinho Huertas of Brazil nailed two key free throws with 5.2 seconds to play as the Brazilians survived the late surge by Australia. Huertas had 10 assists, 15 points on 4-of-12 shooting from the field and connected on 7-of-9 from the free throw stripe.
Anderson Varejao added 12 points and seven rounds while fellow NBA veteran Leandro Barbosa added 15 points and four rebounds. Tiago Splitter, the third NBA player on Brazil’s roster, played poorly and only recorded seven points on 2-of-10 shooting but also pulled down seven rebounds in his 26 minutes.
Men’s soccer — Egypt vs. New Zealand
Egypt and New Zealand played to a 1-1 tie in Group C qualifying play on Sunday. New Zealand struck first when forward Chris Wood scored off of a corner in the 17th minute.
Egypt struck next and tied things up when forward Mohamed Salah punched in a goal at the 40 minute mark.
From there the scoring ended. Due to both teams losing their opening round matches, they will need to win their next matches in order to delay elimination.
Women’s Gymnastics
The second subdivision of women’s gymnastics was in action on Sunday morning.
Vanessa Ferrari’s dominant performance with three individual first-place finishes. She easily grabbed the all-around first place spot and helped her country, Italy, secure the top team position.
Ferrari’s dominance may be enough to push Italy into podium discussions if the Italians can raise their game at the next level of competition.
Men’s Swimming — 200-meter Freestyle
Ryan Lochte took second place in the men’s 200-meter freestyle qualifier on Sunday morning, a day after acing the 400-meter individual medley with a masterful gold medal performance.
Lochte finished in second place to another impressive swimmer, Sun Yang of China.
Yang, the Chinese gold medalist who dominated the 400-meter freestyle on Saturday, was modest after his first-place finish in the 200-meter qualifier.
"I'll try to do my best, but the 200 freestyle is not my best event," he said. "It's more difficult for me compared to the 400 meters or the 1,500 meters."
Women’s Swimming — 200-meter Backstroke
Missy Franklin, a favorite US woman swimmer to earn gold, finished second place in the 100-meter backstroke to Emily Seebohm of Australia.
“I know I can do faster than I did in prelims,” she said.
Franklin is set to swim in seven total events in London and will likely earn a couple more medals in addition to the bronze she received on Saturday night as a member of the women’s 4x100 freestyle relay.
For a good time:
I don’t always tweet, but when I do it’s probably going to be about sports.
