Jordyn Wieber: Rivalry with Teammate Gabby Douglas Will Lead to Team Gold
Jordyn Wieber's surprise second place finish at U.S. Olympic qualifying to teammate Gabby Douglas sets up an interesting rivalry when the individual all-around competition comes around. More importantly, it has set up the USA to take home Olympic gold in the all-around team competition.
If team USA is able to take home gold, it will only be second time in history that the U.S. women have won the event and the first time since 1996. The friendly rivalry that has bloomed between Wieber and Douglas can be thanked if the Americans are able to pull off the team victory.
Wieber came into Olympic qualifying as the unquestioned favorite to lead Team USA and become a strong contender for the all-around gold. Wieber came in with the most decorated background—in 2011, she captured the title of World All-Around Champion. Wieber was also a two-time U.S. All-Around champion and was a key part in Team USA's victory over China in the World Championships.
However, despite all of her past accomplishments, it was Douglas who stole the show at the Olympic qualifying. Douglas was an unheralded member of the American team that won the 2011 World Championships, but showed great development as she took the top honors at the Olympic trials and handed Wieber her first all-around "defeat."
The two will definitely put on a great competition against each other to claim the individual all-around crown, and it's hard to handicap exactly who has the edge. Wieber has the better track record, but Douglas has more momentum.
It ultimately will end with an American claiming the individual gold and with America's top two gymnasts pushing each other to do their best, they could wind up spearheading a historic Women's team that brings home gold.
