2012 Gridiron Kings Camp: Previewing Big Names Under Spotlight This Weekend

Jake MartinJun 7, 2018

The Champion Gridiron Kings event will feature some of the best high school football prospects in the nation.

The Midwest, Southeast, West and Southwest will compete in a 7-on-7 tournament to determine the event's champion.

The championship game, where 5-star cornerback Kendall Fuller will make his anticipated decision, can be viewed live at 12 p.m. ET Sunday on ESPN 3 and the replay can be seen on ESPNU at 7 p.m. ET.

So what makes this bigger than all the other camps going on around the nation? The athletes participating.

ESPN released the full roster of athletes from the event, and 47 of the 65 athletes participating are listed in the ESPN 300.

High school athletes that are sure to grab headlines will be 4-star quarterbacks Brice Ramsey and Shane Morris simply because they are highly-touted quarterbacks. But this camp is stacked with talent in the defensive backfield.

Fuller, Vernon Hargreaves III, Eli Woodard and Cam Burrows are top-5 cornerbacks, according to ESPN, while Leon McQuay III and Priest Willis are top-5 safeties. So these quarterbacks will be tested well in this event.

So can Ramsey and Morris keep their momentum going following an impressive Elite 11 showcase? Well, considering that Morris will become the first two-time participant in the event, the Michigan commit should be just fine.

Morris is thought to be a top-4 quarterback by both Rivals and ESPN. However, Ramsey is closing the distance. Following Ramsey's performance at the Elite 11, the Georgia commit broke the Top 100 in the ESPN 150 and continues to rise in the rankings.

They'll garner the most attention, but people should be watching the athletes in the secondary. Especially, since half of them have yet to commit.

With Fuller included, three of those six are still undecided about where they will play college ball.

Hargreaves is the only 5-star among them, and he recently committed to Florida, while both Woodard and Burrows committed to Ohio State. It'll be fascinating to watch the progression of Ramsey and Morris against these highly-touted defensive backs.

It should give both Georgia and Michigan an idea of just how good these quarterbacks really are. But what about the players they'll be throwing to?

Well, the most notable wide receiver there will be Morris' teammate on Midwest and that's LaQuon Treadwell.

Treadwell is listed as the fourth-best wide receiver, according to ESPN, and though he has yet to commit to any school, he has offers from Alabama, Auburn, Arkansas, LSU, Michigan, Nebraska, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Notre Dame. That should tell you right there how coveted this man's hands are.

But Ramsey will have 4-star running back Alvin Kamara to throw to. Keep an eye on that Georgia fans, as the Bulldogs could witness that connection for years to come should Kamara commit to Georgia

But as you know, defense wins championships, and along with those great defensive backs in attendance, Southeast's Matthew Thomas is the most notable linebacker scheduled to attend.

Thomas is listed as the No. 1 outside linebacker by ESPN. Thomas has yet to make a solid verbal, but has offers from all over the country including Alabama, USC, Florida and Georgia.

With amazing high school athletes spread across the field this weekend, these are the athletes that will make the most noise.
