London 2012: Superstars to Watch on First Full Day of Olympic Competition

Adam WellsJun 5, 2018

As the world prepares for the opening ceremonies at the 2012 London Olympics tonight, we wanted to look ahead even further to this Saturday, which will be the first full day of events and competition.

There have been a few events going on thus far, namely soccer, but everything gets kickstarted after tonight's sure-to-be spectacular kickoff event.

With so much action going on in London, it can be difficult to keep track of all the stars and when they are competing.

Here are the biggest names that you need to watch this Saturday.

Bradley Wiggins, Cycling

What a rush it must be for Wiggins, who goes from winning the 2012 Tour de France last weekend to representing Great Britain in one of the first medal events of the London Olympics.

The July 28th Men's Road Event is loaded with talent, as Mark Cavendish, Taylor Phinney, Tyler Farrar and others will battle for gold in cycling's first event of the 2012 London Games.

Wiggins has the inside track on the gold medal because of his success at the Tour de France, but it will be interesting to see what role, if any, fatigue plays in him making it to the top of the mountain.

Michael Phelps & Ryan Lochte, Swimming

I am not sure if a lot of people have heard of these two, but they are really, really good in the pool. Phelps is obviously looking to make history as the most decorated gold medalist in the history of the Olympics.

Lochte, on the other hand, is the rising star in the sport, who is trying to put a damper on Phelps' parade. There is a friendly rivalry that has developed between these two, which only increases the amount of attention fans will be giving them.

The world might want to focus on swimmers other than Phelps and Lochte, but everyone is aware that these are the two biggest names in the sport.

To get a chance to watch them in the 400-meter individual medley on the first full day of competition is aces.

Im Dong-Hyun, Archery

By now everyone knows the story of South Korea's Dong-Hyun, who has helped lead his country to gold medals at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics and happens to be legally blind.

Despite being a veteran of these Olympics, it is still fascinating to watch what Dong-Hyun can do with a bow and arrow.

Given that the first full day of competition will feature Dong-Hyun and the South Korean team, going for a medal is just icing on the cake.
