South Carolina Football Recruiting: Odds Clemson Snatches 4-Star WR Away
Time is closing in on 4-star wide receiver Mike Williams' decision.
With both South Carolina and Clemson at the top of his list, Williams will have a difficult decision to make on July 31 when he announces his commitment. In an interview with Tiger Illustrated's Ryan Bartow, Williams stated that he's leaning toward becoming a Tiger rather than a Gamecock.
"Clemson has a little edge now ... a little bit," Williams said. "I fit in their offense real good. Playing with guys like Nuk Hopkins and eventually playing in his position will be real good. I fit in their offense real well."
Well, isn't this getting interesting? In a visit with South Carolina, Williams had the opportunity to work with Alshon Jeffery, which is somebody who he "grew up watching."
But in his visit with Clemson, Williams had the chance to work with Sammy Watkins, and if he fits into the system well enough, he could play alongside him when he arrives on campus.
So let the speculation begin about where this prospect will land. One thing we do know for sure, however, is that Williams will stay in South Carolina to play his college football.
"I'll either pick Clemson or South Carolina," Williams said.
So which will it be? Which program best suits this wide receiver? At South Carolina, Williams will play for a legendary coach in Steve Spurrier, and the ol' ball coach has been known to throw the ball around, that's for sure. That's a great sell in itself, but what about Dabo Sweeney's Tigers?
With Watkins, Sweeney turned an unknown freshman into a superstar in a year's time, and not to mention the culture at Clemson is changing.
Winning is an addiction, and once a school gets a small taste, it expects more helpings. This is the case for both schools, so with Clemson and South Carolina having plenty to offer, it might come down to which offer is the hottest come July 31.
As of right now, Williams said it himself that Clemson is in the driver's seat. What seemed to be a 50/50 shot at Williams is looking to be closer to a 60/40 shot for Clemson, and that should make Gamecock fans nervous come next Tuesday. Oh, if I were a betting man...
Within a week's time, an already dangerous wide receiving corps at Clemson will most likely add another playmaker on the outside.
