US Olympic Gymnastics Team 2012: Americans Who Will Dominate in London

Chris TrapassoJul 25, 2012

The American gymnasts are vying for Olympic gold at this year's London games, a feat that is certainly within reach after both the men's and women's teams medaled in 2008 in Beijing.

While the depth of both teams will be more vital than anything, they'll be anchored by a few standout gymnasts during their demanding journey, which hopefully ends with an all-around team victory for the men and women.

Let's take a look at the three gymnasts who will dominate for Team USA.

Jordyn Wieber

Wieber is the most technically sound gymnast on the American roster and is probably the most talented.

She was consistent throughout the 2011 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, winning the individual all-around along with the first-place U.S. team. The 17-year-old from Michigan also won the 2012 Pacific Rim Gymnastic Championships in Washington. Her strengths include the floor exercise and the vault.

While Wieber may not dominate one specific event, she'll dominate with her consistency throughout and will be a integral piece to the American gold medal aspirations.

Jonathan Horton

Horton, a member of the 2008 Olympic squad, will captain this year's team that Juliet Macur of the New York Times labeled "so good that it could be the first United States men’s team to win gold since the 1984 Los Angeles Games."

The 26-year-old won a silver medal on the high bar in Beijing and was a major contributor on the American team that won a bronze medal in all-around.

He's a vocal leader and backs it up with the ability to compete at a high level in a number of events. Like Wieber, his overall consistency will significantly help the Americans on their quest for gold.

Jacob Dalton

The 20-year-old Dalton, who competed collegiately at the University of Oklahoma, was a member of the U.S. team that finished third at the 2011 World Artistic Gymnastic Championships.

Dalton is an extremely decorated American champion, having won the NCAA floor and vault titles a year ago.

He automatically qualified for the London games by finishing second in the Olympic trails to Horton.

Dalton is a floor specialist and has immense potential to create a stir with a strong showing at this year's Olympiad.
