Dallas Cowboys' Defensive Secondary Options

Jason HenryFeb 20, 2009

If you are a die-hard Cowboys fan, watching the ‘Boys play defense last year sometimes made your stomach turn.

The team only managed eight interceptions all year and one defensive touchdown, ranking 24th in the league. Terrance Newman led the team in picks with four and four others tied for second with one interception each.

For the 2009 season, not only should the Cowboys focus on improving their defense, but the defensive secondary should be their top priority.

Though Newman was injured for most of the season, he still managed to grab four balls from opposing quarterbacks. Rookie Mike Jenkins held his own with one, but was wildly inconsistent. Anthony Henry’s injuries may be a sign of his age and more wear and tear than the ‘Boys bargained for when they signed him.

Since the team is hurting so badly on the secondary side, there are a few options available to a team that’s riding $10 million under the salary cap.

Dre Bly, Free Agent

Bly was released by the Broncos a few days ago as new head coach Josh McDaniels and new General Manager Brian Xanders are sweeping out the majority of Mike Shanahan’s old players.

Bly is a veteran of 11 years, and could play either opposite Newman or in the nickel position.

Bly would also bring stability to a shaky secondary.

Chris McAllister, Free Agent

The Baltimore Ravens let go of this All-Pro corner when teams were first able to release players. McAllister was once part of the cornerstone to the Ravens famed defense headed by linebacker Ray Lewis. A three-time Pro Bowler, Chris could be very helpful to the Dallas defense, as well as in the locker room.

He probably won’t command as much money as Bly will in the open market, and could be a short-term fix for a team looking to win a Super Bowl very soon.

Stay Away From Julius Peppers, Carolina Panthers

Peppers was tagged yesterday by the Panthers, so the possibility of the Cowboys trading for him are pretty much thrown out of the window. The ‘Boys would have to give up two first-round picks and sign him to a long term deal. If I were Jerry Jones, I would stay away from Peppers because of the draft implications and the money that he will command.

But knowing Mr. Jones, this is right up his alley. He needs another star to assist in opening up his new stadium and Peppers would be great for putting people in the seats.

The Cowboys have a viable defense that just needs a little more creativity and stability. The sacks are plentiful, as are the big plays given up.

Signing Bly or McAllister is a step in the right direction for a franchise on the brink of destruction.
