Silas Redd: Weighing Pros and Cons of Penn State RB Possibly Transferring to USC

Jake MartinJun 7, 2018

If Penn State's Silas Redd transfers to USC, it could have a dramatic effect on the landscape of college football.

Redd joining Matt Barkley, Marquis Lee and Robert Woods wouldn't bode well for any defensive coordinator in the country. It's downright scary, because it would make one of the best offenses in the nation even better. USC would pose an impressive running game to go along with its aerial attack, and the college football world first got wind of this last night on Twitter.

ESPN's Joe Schad tweeted that USC has notified Penn State about their interest in attaining Redd.

USC has notified PSU it is recruiting Redd, per source

This has USC fans buzzing, as it should, but it could also have an interesting result on the future of USC football. USC's 2013 recruiting class is one of the best in school history. The Trojans have 16 total commits with four of them being 5-stars, according to 247sports.com. However, two of their 4-star athletes are running backs.

Both Ty Isaac and Justin Davis are skilled enough to come in and contribute right away, but now they face the possibility of that not happening should Redd join the team.

Assuming Redd becomes a Trojan running back and stays for his senior season in 2013, both Isaac and Davis could be riding the pine, and that's something to consider before signing that letter of intent.

Isaac is a 6'3", 215-pound back who's the 24th-ranked player nationally by Rivals, while Davis is a 6'1", 190-pound back who Rivals ranked 41st nationally.

The recruiting process never ends until those players put that ink to paper on National Signing Day, and you can bet that opposing schools will use this as leverage to try to reel these commits away from USC.

Having said that, it's a gamble worth taking if you're USC. Nothing is a sure thing in college football, and if USC has the opportunity to pick up a quality running back who rushed for 1,241 yards and seven touchdowns in 2011, by all means, take him.

Though you'd like to win tomorrow, winning today matters most, and the same can be said about years. The bottom line is USC doesn't even know if Redd will even come back for a senior season, nor if this will effect recruits in anyway, shape or form. But the possibility still lingers.
