Penn State Football: Will Other Schools Take Transfers at This Late Juncture?

Jake MartinJun 3, 2018

No one would blame any Penn State player for jumping ship.

After NCAA president Mark Emmert torched Penn State with a four-year postseason ban, Emmert made transferring a viable option for players on the roster. Whoever chooses to leave will be able to transfer to any school without having to sit out a year, and all incoming freshmen will be released from their national letters of intent.

With such an option, one must be wondering not if players will make the move but how many. But more importantly, will opposing schools be chomping at the bit to get these players? After all, the start of camp is just around the corner.

But for those thinking that teams won't have the availability to accept players, well, the NCAA is "considering" waiving scholarship limits for whichever school the athlete wants to transfer to.

Should the school have all 85 roster spots filled, it would be limited to 84 scholarships and a signing class of 24 the following year. Oh how the plot thickens.

If the NCAA does decide to let that happen, schools should be willing to take in these athletes despite it being so close to the season. It's unlikely that opposing programs wouldn't be in favor of capturing 2012 recruits, but being hesitant about taking in a senior is somewhat understandable.

However, the athletes at Penn State have been through the ringer, and it wasn't even their fault. And who knows, maybe these players can find a relatively similar system that they can adjust to easily.

Time may be an issue, but coaches would also realize that they would be inheriting great athletes that can help their program. It shouldn't be too difficult to find a role for an athlete capable of changing the game with his speed and athleticism.

And besides, these players deserve better, and if they choose to play college football elsewhere, they should be allowed to and welcomed with open arms.
