Michael FitzpatrickFeb 19, 2009

Golf fans have been calling up friends and family to spread the news.

Sponsors are breathing a little easier knowing that their large investment in the PGA Tour could once again be justified during these tough economic times.

PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem can sit back, relax, and take a few days off knowing that his golden ticket is back.

At around 5pm Eastern Standard Time, Tiger Woods announced on his website that he will be playing in next week’s Accenture Match Play Championship.

Woods’ decision, though of course more than welcomed by anyone who has an interest or stake in the PGA Tour, is somewhat surprising due to the grueling layout of the Dove Mountain course and the possibility of a 36-hole final match.

Although surprising, Woods’ decision to return for next week’s Match Play Championship is a very encouraging sign.

Over the past 12 years of Woods’ career, we have seen a man who is obsessed with winning, silencing his critics, and intimidating anyone who comes close to challenging him.

With all the talk circulating about how Woods might take a while to get back to his top form or even that he may never be the same player again, you can be assured that Woods has been looking forward to silencing these critics for a very long time.

One thing we know for sure is that there is no way Woods is going to tee it up in a PGA Tour event without knowing for certain that he at least has a legitimate chance to win.

For this reason, it is an encouraging sign that Woods obviously feels healthy enough to walk this grueling mountain course and has enough confidence in his game right now to truly believe he can win as early as next week.

Standard logic would suggest that it could take Woods some time to get back into the swing of things; no pun intended.

But, as we all know by now, standard logic simply does not apply to Tiger Woods.

The man has overcome every form of adversity that has been thrown at him on the golf course, including his now legendary win at the 2008 US Open while playing 91 holes on a broken leg.

For that reason, it shouldn’t surprise us one bit if Woods comes back from reconstructive ACL surgery and an eight-month layoff to win the Accenture Match Play Championship next week.

Win or lose next week, if you’re a golf fan you will know that Woods’ return to the PGA Tour is the best news to hit the golf world in a very long time.
