UFC 149: What We Learned from Antonio Carvalho vs. Daniel Pineda
UFC 149 saw its first upset in just the second fight of the evening Saturday in Calgary, when featherweight Antonio Carvalho needed only one minute and 11 seconds to knock out the favored Daniel Pineda with a straight right hand.
Carvalho looked great from the opening second, showing smooth standup and good accuracy in landing both kicks and punches. It was Pineda's second consecutive loss.
What we'll remember about this fight
What it meant to Carvalho. Upon netting his first win in the UFC, Carvalho sank to the mat in tears. And he was all class in victory, checking on Pineda and thanking him for accepting the match on short notice. And Carvalho, an Ontario native, was a hit with his fight-crazy countrymen, who showered him with about as loud an ovation as you'll see at such an early stage of the evening.
What we learned about Daniel Pineda
It's hard to impugn a fighter's chin based on 71 seconds of action against an opponent who was undoubtedly at the top of his game. But at a minimum, it's probably safe to say that Pineda, who took this fight on short notice and was fighting for the fourth time in 2012, may want to be a little more deliberate in his career planning moving forward. You have to admire a warrior spirit, but you have to work smart, too.
What we learned about Antonio Carvalho
He's got big league game. There were no jitters and no hesitation. And his strikes were an extension of that, deliberately but very forcefully placed.
What's next for Pineda
He'll be back, but hopefully he gets a full camp in this time. The loser between fast-rising Jimy Hettes and hard-wrestling Marcus Brimage at UFC 152 would offer a good measuring stick.
What's next for Carvalho
Now that he's solidified his place in the UFC, presumably a vacation. Then a bout with Diego Brandao to see if that standup can stand up to another stiff test.
