British Open 2012 Leaderboard: Tiger Woods in Contention Going into Final Round

Chris TrapassoJun 7, 2018

Tiger Woods fired a even par round of 70 on Saturday and finds himself five shots back of leader Adam Scott heading into today's final round at the British Open.

The world's most recognizable golfer wasn't nearly as sharp with his ball-striking in Round 3 as he was the first two days, but a shaky start coupled and an ongoing struggle with the speed of the greens led to his highest score of the week.

The scoring conditions were reasonable compared to past Open Championship venues, but pin locations tucked closer to the edges of greens made Royal Lytham and St. Anne's a much more challenging course on moving day.

Woods has intelligently employed a rather conservative strategy thus far, especially off the tee, often carving shots away from the 205 bunkers that spot the links course.

Though the cautious approach has yielded a respectable score of six-under par, in order for Tiger to snap the longest major championship drought of his illustrious career, he must be more aggressive.

Much more.

It's hard to question Woods' course management skills. He, more than anyone, truly understands how long and arduous a major is, but it's time to switch game plans.

Adam Scott is in the zone, striking the ball beautifully and demonstrating a marvelous feel on the greens at Royal Lytham. Woods cannot count on a destructive final round from a player of Scott's caliber, someone who's clearly on top of his game.

The front nine is undeniably the easier side, so Tiger has to get bolder with his approach shots and potentially leave the iron in his bag on a few tee shots.

The only way he'll stand a chance on the final nine is if he posts a 34 or below, as it'll send shockwaves through the minds of the other contenders.

It's not often Woods alters his course of action at a major and he has executed his initial game plan brilliantly through three rounds, but he must show a glimpse of the old Tiger, who fired at flags with unwavering confidence, if he wants to have a legitimate opportunity to win his 15th major.
