British Open 2012 Leaderboard: Unheralded Golfers Who'll Make a Move in Round 3

Chris TrapassoJul 21, 2012

Tiger Woods and Adam Scott are the two presumptive and most recognizable challengers to second-round leader Brandt Snedeker at the British Open, but you're crazy to think no one else will surge up the leaderboard on Saturday.

Snedeker has somewhat of a comfortable lead, but there's plenty of golf to play and many of birdies to be made in the relatively welcoming conditions at Royal Lytham.

These two solid, but reasonably unheralded golfers will make their move on the aptly named "moving day" at this year's Open Championship.

Matt Kuchar

To some, Kuchar, the world's No.6 ranked player, is a force to be reckoned with every week. Though he's displayed extreme consistency and has been successful over the last two PGA Tour seasons, he typically doesn't get the notoriety he deserves.

If anything, his serene demeanor should help him during what will most likely be a variety of pressure-packed moments this weekend, even though that calm disposition is the reason some fail to take him seriously when it matters most.

He shot 69 in Round 1 and 67 in Round 2, and not surprisingly, has rode a steady driver to his four-under-par score.

The 34-year-old American has hit 75 percent of the fairways through three rounds and is considered one of the better iron players in the game today.

As is usually the case, it'll come down to the putter.

He gained valuable experience winning this year's Players Championship, so he's keenly aware as to what it takes to triumph on one of golf's biggest stages.

A few shots under par on Saturday will put the four-time PGA Tour winner into the thick of things entering the final round as he'll look to win his first major championship that's eluded him throughout his decorated golf career.

Jason Dufner

Another sound American golfer with a quiet temperament that typically makes him an afterthought.

Dufner most certainly has the game to win a major championship, as was made apparent during his run at the U.S. Open this June.

While he finished T-4 at Olympic, he emerged from relative obscurity with laser-like ball-striking and a casual comfortableness on the greens.

He hit 71.4 percent of the fairways through two rounds and found 81.5 percent of the greens in regulation. He made two double bogeys in an even par opening round of 70, but fired a bogey-free 66 on Friday, a score he's undoubtedly capable of shooting again today.

This former Auburn Tiger has the ball-striking ability and relaxed manner that fits wonderfully with what's needed to win a British Open.

Like Kuchar, steadiness is Dufner's calling card, and if he makes a few intermediate-to-long putts, Dufner will be in one of the final groups on Sunday.
