British Open Leaderboard 2012: Stars Poised to Make Big Weekend Moves

Adam WellsJun 1, 2018

If you were looking for the perfect storm of events to stimulate you into watching a major, the 2012 Open Championship is the event for you.

The event at Royal Lytham & St. Annes has produced a slew of big names and up-and-coming stars at the top of the leaderboard, so there is tremendous appeal in the event for casual fans.

Yet for all the intrigue at the top, there are still so many things that are going to happen over the next two days that will change everything.

British Open Leaderboard After Second Round

 No. 1 Brandt Snedeker -10
 No. 2 Adam Scott -9
 No. 3 Tiger Woods -6
 No. 4 Thorbjorn Olesen -5
 T-No. 5 Paul Lawrie -4
 T-No. 5 Graeme McDowell -4
 T-No. 5 Paul Aiken -4
 T-No. 5 Jason Dufner -4
 T-No. 5 Matt Kuchar -4
 No. 10 Ernie Els -3

Tiger Woods (-6 After Two Rounds, Four Shots Behind Leader)

It is almost too easy to pick Woods to be a big mover in an event because of who he is. Trying to find all the reasons that Tiger won't win is missing what is right in front of you.

In fact, Woods is ready to take back his place as the most dominant golfer in the world. I don't think he will ever be the player he was a year ago, and that is OK. As long as he can be 75 to 80 percent of that, he will still be very good.

His shot from the bunker on 18 to end the second round was brilliant, and gave him the momentum he needed to take over this tournament on moving day.

Ernie Els (-3 After Two Rounds)

Els is just lurking around right now, waiting for the opportunity to make a big move on Saturday. He got off to a really good start on Friday, shooting a three-under-par 67 before settling for an even-par 70 on Friday.

His solid performance may make it difficult for him to catch up to the leaders this weekend, yet there is something about the quiet efficiency with which he is playing. If Els can figure out a way to play one spectacular round, similar to what Adam Scott did on Thursday and Brandt Snedeker did on Friday, he will be right in the mix on Sunday.

Matt Kuchar (-4 After Two Rounds)

There is something to be said for consistency, which is exactly what Kuchar has been through two rounds at the Open Championship. He might not be dominating in a way that signals big things are coming, but is doing enough to hang around.

Kuchar is not yet a household name, though his victory at the Players Championship in May certainly helped put him on the radar this season.

It is going to take a spectacular round on Saturday or Sunday for Kuchar to threaten for the Claret Jug. I would not be shocked to see him make a few big moves over the weekend.
